HELP!!gastrocnemius recession vs achilles lengthening?

Please share your experiences. I went in for pre op yesterday. The orders were for pttd debridement, tendon transfer, calcaneal osteotomy and achilles tendon lenghtening. Now doc has changed the achilles lenghtening to gastrocnemius resection. Is this more involved? Longer recovery? Please answer soon. My surgery is in a few days!

Re: HELP!!gastrocnemius recession vs achilles lengthening?

cosmo,
part of my surgeries were the calcaneal osteotomy and gastrocnemius resection. I really had no problems with the recession. My doctor had to gradually change the degree of dorsi/plantar flexion in my boot/cast so that the gastroc would slowly stretch out and that sometimes hurt for a day or two but never a big deal. The resection required stretching during PT once I was at that point and some deep tissue massage but again no big deal. The only issue I had with the resection, which I think could happen with either, is that they had to leave the staples in one leg for an extra week because of extra swelling and this created some extra scar tissue on the gastroc that my PT really had to work to break up and sometimes would cause me pain but that's healed up now and I wouldn't worry about that part of the surgery; it by far caused me the least amount of issues.

aed2113--thanks for that info. You put it in perspective for me. In the scheme of things-this procedure is the small stuff! I had just resolved myself to do the surgery as discussed then he changed it and I got scared.

Re: HELP!!gastrocnemius resection vs achilles lengthening?

I understand completely...I like knowing exactly what is going on. For one of my surgeries he wasn't sure if he was going to have to do a second osteotomy and for a different one he wasn't positive he would have to use this really annoyingly long screw (they were things he had t figure out once he got in and saw my foot) and after both apparently the first thing I asked the nurses when coming out of the anesthesia was if he had to do those things...it's your body and it's hard when it's in someone else's control, but I think you're gonna be fine on this one. GOOD LUCK!
