Yellow toenail split at base (not a fungus)
My left big toe has been yellow for quite some time now and I figured it was just stained from dark nail polish. So I have been nail polish free for about 2 months now. It is still very yellow. Then a couple weeks ago I was pushing back my cuticles on my big toe and discovered that the nail is split open at the base right by the cuticle. My sister in law figured it was a nail fungus because of the yellow color and took me to an urgent care center that same night. The doctor said it was not a fungus and that the nail may have encountered some sort of “nail trauma” in her words, and that it looks like the nail is dying and removing itself from the nail bed. However, I don’t remember hitting my toe anywhere. I figure I might have hit it when I had nail polish on and didn’t notice that it was bruised or something. The doctor went on to say that I should just leave it alone and wait to see what happens, that hopefully it would grow out on its own.
Has this happened to anyone else before? What can I do to make it grow out faster?
