Is a Bunion REALLY the cause of my pain???

I've had pain in my foot for about 15 years after a break dancing mishap. jammed big toe joint. I'm not sure if this was a cause of the bunion but my doctor says I do have a bunion. 10 years a go a doctor told me my sesmoid was fractured under the same joint and was probably the cause of my pain. He took it out. since then there has been more pain and my new foot doc told me that might contribute to the original problem......a bunion. Ha anyone out there had bunion surgery and still in the same pain?

Removing a sesmoid can cause a bunion because they help to keep the toe in alignment. I had a bunionectomy and am having pain in the sesmoids. From what I understand removing 1 can cause the bunion to return; removing both can have the big toe buckle like a hammertoe.

I agree that well may be the cause of your problem. However, removal of the bunion alone may not solve the problem after all this time. What kind of doctor did you see?
I recommend finding a good sports med ortho who specializes in feet. Where are you?

I'm seeing a very recommended sports doctor. actually two great docs are doing the surgery. I believe I'm set with them, but even they can mis diagnose
I'm in boston.

I hope that your surgery and recovery went well and am interested in whether you would recommend your doctors. I am looking for a great doc in Boston to do a fusion of my right toe joint (I have hallus rigidis), and it would be good to have a "team" approach.

Thanks and best wishes.

I'm glad you're doing well, and thanks for passing on your docs' names. I'll check them out and see how often they've done fusions. It will be interesting to see, insofar as I think if a fusion is done an athlete's career is over...I haven't seen any basketball players with rocker shoes!
