Re: Pain from external fixator
Yes, I have had this experience! Three years ago I had my ankle fused using an external fixator. It was definitely the most round the clock kind of pain I have ever had. And my pin sites NEVER stopped weeping.
I don't mean to scare you, but I do want to make sure you are keeping an eye out for infection. I know my OS went with the external fix becauase it is the most reliable method of fusion, but the down fall is the risk of infection in the pin sites. It doesn't happen to everyone, so odds are you will be fine. However, it is important to watch out for the signs like redness, yellow discharge from the openings, sudden increase in pain, fever, etc.
By the way, in case you are wondering, once the ex fix is removed the pin sites heal up pretty well - much better than I thought they would.
I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have.
Keep me posted!
