Re: Modified Brostrom
I've had 2 Brostroms and the second one had a back up new ligament added to it procedure.
The first one went well, but I have multi-joint instability and my ligaments just stretched back out. After the first one I was allowed to run at 5 mos post-op. I got back to running and karate and competeted in world championships in karate so I did okay.
But it gradually stretched back out and I had other, more painful issues with a big OCD and torn tendons. So I had another brostrom with a funky repair using tissue from a sheath around my fibula to make new ligaments. THis time around I was given the okay to run at 3 or 4 mos, (way too early for the OATS procedure I had on the OCD). I got back to running again, but had a frozen ankle and went back in for surgery #3. I'm only 7 weeks post-op so no running yet. I think I'll wait till the 5 mos post-op period again to run. I fully expect to run and get back to karate.
Each time I had many other procedures down than just the brostrom. THe brostrom wasn't so bad in terms of post-op pain. The biggest pain in the butt is the NWB period and then when you first start walking again. Month 3 is the worst.
You should be able to run again and you will find that once the instabilty is gone you wished you had done it years ago.
