Smile Modified Brostrom

All,

I am in the process of setting up a "Modified Brostrom" procedure. I have read quite a few threads regarding this procedure and there seems to be a large range of outcomes. I have had a lot of problems with my right ankle over the past 10 or so years...I am now 25. It started with basic ankle sprains and has turned into constant pain and a touch of arthritis! (I have probably sprained it 20-25 times) I have a hard time running and my ankle is sore after work...and I am an engineer who does mostly desk work! It always feels like it is stiff, if I do too much it is sore to the touch and I literally have no lateral movement in it. I still participate in triathlons (occasionally) but am only able to hold up for a 5k run...and even then I pay for a few days. I am hoping that after the procedure I will be able to run again and eventually participate in a Half Ironman. Is this out of the question? Is the surgery worth it? How long were you guys out before you could start running again? And how can I get in contact with BigDog Two?! (I see that you have done marathons and tris....I wonder how competitive one can be after this procedure)

I am extremely excited to have a somewhat normal ankle but am nervous at the same time. I miss running and hope I can enjoy it some day soon...

I appreciate any input you guys can give me and hope your ankles are happy!

Re: Modified Brostrom

Hey there...
I've had 2 Brostroms and the second one had a back up new ligament added to it procedure.
The first one went well, but I have multi-joint instability and my ligaments just stretched back out. After the first one I was allowed to run at 5 mos post-op. I got back to running and karate and competeted in world championships in karate so I did okay.
But it gradually stretched back out and I had other, more painful issues with a big OCD and torn tendons. So I had another brostrom with a funky repair using tissue from a sheath around my fibula to make new ligaments. THis time around I was given the okay to run at 3 or 4 mos, (way too early for the OATS procedure I had on the OCD). I got back to running again, but had a frozen ankle and went back in for surgery #3. I'm only 7 weeks post-op so no running yet. I think I'll wait till the 5 mos post-op period again to run. I fully expect to run and get back to karate.
Each time I had many other procedures down than just the brostrom. THe brostrom wasn't so bad in terms of post-op pain. The biggest pain in the butt is the NWB period and then when you first start walking again. Month 3 is the worst.
You should be able to run again and you will find that once the instabilty is gone you wished you had done it years ago.
