Foot update - osteomyelitis?

Hi everyone, I had my big toe fused on October 28th. It seems to have been going well. I went to see the podiatrist to see about getting my orthotics adjusted. He wanted to cast me for new ones. I decided against that at this point in time. I made an appointment with him for when he returns in March.

I asked him how long it should take before there would be some evidence of fusion on the x-rays. He suggested I get my foot x-rayed again. I did that on Monday, and then saw my doctor on Friday. She said the x-ray showed that the bone might be receding, and referred me to get a bone scan because this can be a sign of osteomyelitis, or infection in the bone. Apparently that gets treated with six weeks of antibiotics. I asked her how this works, and she suggested we cross that bridge when we get to it. She will send the x-ray report and bone scan report to the surgeon.

I am a little discouraged by this, but not worried......yet. I get the bone scan on Thursday and then we will go from there. I trust my doctor and she is good.

Has anyone experienced this? Any tips on helping with healing?

Re: Foot update - osteomyelitis?

The doc who ordered orthotics is not the doc who did the surgery. It felt too soon, and like he wanted to sell a product.

I can wear most of my shoes that I have had for awhile. They are Merrells and Keens. I bought a pair of Clarks just before Christmas that are very comfy. All flat sensible shoes right now. Just like before. Now though, the foot feels okay in them, and they are comfy shoes. Before the surgery, the foot was cranky, even in the best shoes.

Re: Foot update - osteomyelitis?

Northwind,

Do you have any other symptoms of osteomyelitis? Like redness, fever, chills, swelling and warmth? If not, it could really be just a mistake - osteomyelitis is hard to see on an xray. I wish you luck! Keep posting!

Re: Foot update - osteomyelitis?

Hi stepbystep, I don't think I have any other symptoms. I was sort of fighting a bug last week, but I think that is different. My doctor said there were no clinical symptoms, like heat and redness in the foot. The bone is apparently receding in the x-ray, or looks like it is. That is a cause for some concern if that is actually happening. Hopefully it is just a shadow, and if it is an infection, that it is something that antibiotics will clobber.

Bone scan

I had my bone scan today. There was a bright white spot at the site of the surgery. When I asked about it, the technician said there was "activity" there. I suspect it is an infection. I have been tired lately, and my foot seems a little sorer. I am bummed out. The technician said the radiologist's report would be at my doctor's office in 3-5 working days. I have an appointment with my doctor on Wednesday.

I guess this sucks because I am almost at the three month post-surgery mark. That seems to usually be a benchmark of healing. I guess I have to be patient.

Re: Foot update - osteomyelitis?

Northwind,

Did you have a metal pin in the bone that showed the "activity"?

I don't know about bone scans, but I can tell you that on an MRI - if there has been metal placed in the bone prior to the MRI being done it can show abnormal results. Sometimes radiologists assume it is infection before the os really has a chance to look at it and determine knowing the history and examining you in person. I had this happen a couple of years ago.

Again, my experience is with an MRI and I really don't know about bone scans - maybe they are different???

Keep posting and stay positive! I have made it through two infections, so I understand.

Re: Foot update - osteomyelitis?

Thanks step. I do have a plate there, so let's hope that is the explanation.

The white spot was pretty straight and it looked like it followed the line where the two bone ends meet......the spot where fusion is supposed to happen. It was not around the plate, and in fact, I could see no evidence of the plate.......but then I am not an expert, so that is for what it is worth of course. I am also hoping the "activity" is fusing.

Re: Foot update - osteomyelitis?

Northwind,

I think it could be fusing that is causing the "activity" - especially since you haven't experienced a lot of other symptoms. When I was diagnosed with osteomyelitis I was in excruciating pain - couldn't sleep for more than 20 minutes - no pain meds worked - I was curled up in a ball on my couch - It was awful!

I am not telling you this to scare you - it is really to tell you the symptoms I experienced. Also, my dr could tell just by looking at my ankle without any xrays that it was infected - red, swelling, warmth, etc.....

I hope you find out all is well!
