Failed big toe joint replacements

I'm a 56 year old very active woman who had silicone joint replacement surgery in 1988. The pain I had that caused me to have the surgery never went away. Twenty years later, the joints are breaking down and affecting the surrounding tissue and bones and are now more painfull than ever.
I recently saw an orthopedic surgeon whose advise for me was to go home and live with it for as long as I can. He said my chances for a successful surgery to correct the problem were low.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: Failed big toe joint replacements

Did he not recommend a fusion? That's rather the gold standard procedure. Did you see a foot and ankle ortho?

Re: Failed big toe joint replacements

I also thought that fusion was the "fix" for a failed joint replacement, even if it meant a bone graft.

Maybe you need a second opinion.
