Smile New toe joint 2nd toe

I am having a new metal toe joint put in my 2nd toe in a few weeks. Has anyone had this procedure done?

Re: New toe joint 2nd toe

You mean a joint replacement? Several people on here have had them on their big toe. None who have posted here (that I've seen in the past few years) had any success with them. They eventually had them removed and had fusions. What's the problem with your toe?

Re: New toe joint 2nd toe

From what they are telling me I have Freigburg's Infraction..Which is the when the joint colapses and dies?? I have been given so many different diagnoses in the last 2 1/2 yrs from a neuroma, pinched nerve, tendonisis, stress fracture to this last one. I have been in constant pain for the last 2.5 years. I have had 2 mri's 1 bone scan been to the neurologist, chiropractor, PT, orthopedic and 2 different foot drs. He wanted me to have a bone stimulator but insurance co would not cover. This is the foot problem of a 20 year old ballet dancer or runner. Not a 50 yr old basketball game watcher.....LOL After 8 shots of cortizone and being in a walking cast for 6 months I am finally going to let them replace the toe joint. He did say that they have not had much luck with the joint replacement of the big toe but this is the second one and the result are better. I cannot walk bearfooted or in anything but my croc sandals. Tough with all the snow we have had.. I have spent a small fortune on shoes and orthotics....he tells me the surgery will last 1 hr and I will be able to walk right away without crutches or a cane, I will be in the walking cast for another 6 weeks...so we will see. Thanks,SueAnn

Re: New toe joint 2nd toe

Well I didn't have to have the metal toe joint put in. When he removed the toe joint to see the cartiledge underneath the toe, a yellow liquid came out. Not sure if there was an infection or not but he just shortened the toe and made more room for the bottom of the toe in the joint. Right now it feels great. we will see after I am out of the post op shoe and into regular shoes. I can walk without pain for the first time in 2.5 years. Only just can't walk for a long time due to swelling. He said that would take time to get back to normal.

Re: New toe joint 2nd toe

I have been diagnosed with Freibergs by multiple different doctors. I am 20 years old (not a dancer!) and I've had second metatarsal pain for about 2 years now! I go to college in the city and have been suffering and unable to walk. The pain started in my left foot and after countless MRI's, X-rays, and bone scans they (orthopedists at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC) have no idea what to do. After about a year of pain in my left foot, my right foot started hurting in the same place.

Now after being in casts, air boots, orthotics, and metatarsal lifts the pain persists with vengeance! I used the bone stimulator on my left foot for about 3 months and was unsure if it even did anything. The pain in my left foot is subsiding gradually, but my right foot is collapsing. I am stuck with orthotics that don't even relieve the pain. Walking is extremely painful!! The doctors don't want to operate on a 20 yr old female for fears of permanent impairment. I feel hopeless because nothings working and I have no idea what to even consider as my next step.

I've been looking into getting my joint/toe replaced and after your post I am going to bring it up with my current specialist.

SueAnn, how is your pain now? Can you wear any shoes you want? What activities hurt? Does it even hurt at all? How long was the recovery period? I have so many questions!!

Smile Re: New toe joint 2nd toe

Well I had the surgery back in March of 09 and I have been pretty much out of pain. I does swell when it is really humid out and I still have some pain when I have to walk or stand on it alot... like being on vacation and doing alot of walking. I cannot wear high heels at all because my toe does not bend. but I have always worn flats or sneakers. I wear the reebok new simply tone sneakers because of the air pockets seem to cushion the area. I have a screw in the 2nd toe holding the joint in place. I want you to know though that I am in my 50's and overweight. good luck to you I hope you get some answers and relief from your pain.
