Lower Leg and Foot Question

I get these spontaneous spasms in my feet and lower leg (outer front of my shin) that cause my big toe to be extended toward my leg. This will happen when I am not doing anything...even just sitting in a chair. It is very painful and I can't stop the extension of my toe no matter what I try. I try massaging the leg, but nothing seems to help. It stops all on it's own. Sometimes it will last for 20 minutes at a time. I believe it is something involving the Extensor Hallucis Longus muscle, but I'm not sure what to do about it. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any advice?

Thanks!
