ankle fusion along with calcaneal osteotomy
I need some direction. I have arthritis. I knew I would need 2 knee replacements and in the past 2 years have lost about 110 lbs. The weight loss has decreased my knee pain and I'm delaying it as long as possible. I had been having problems with my left ankle and have been told I need ankle fusion surgery (due to severe arthritis) along with the calcaneal osteotomy. I've had flat feet all my life. I was given this information last summer, but chose to be fitted for a brace that has taken me out of pain. I can actually walk up to 2 miles with a little bit of pain. However, when the brace is off I can't have my ankle move even the slightest bit to the right or I am in instant severe pain. I am totally dependent on the brace in order to walk. The point being I can walk with bearable pain. Is this surgery worth the risk? I'm 55 and still have a lot of living to do. The weight loss has given me back the mobility I lost for so many years due to knee pain and now I'm so afraid to have this ankle surgery put me back in a chair sitting all day. If you've gone through this same surgery let me know how you're doing.
