Achillies Tendon trouble

Hello I am new here. I recently injured my achillies tendon. It was first labeled achillies tendonitis and I was placed in a short cam boot for 2 weeks and given exercises to do. After the two weeks were up I took off the boot but the injury never got better so I went back to the MD and they did a MRI and discovered that there was actually a mild achillies tear at the distal end where it attaches to the heal and a small bone fragment from the heal. I am now told to go back into the boot and start physical therapy and see an orthopedic surgeon. Has anyone had similar issues? how did they treat it? I am hoping that I don't have to have surgery.
thanks for any help you can offer!
