I don't know about an ankle injury, but my understanding of the boot is to redirect your weight to your ankle/knee depending on the size of the boot. I've had bunion surgeries and have worn the boot and I have never experienced more pain being in the boot while walking.
Your question may be a good one for your doctor? If you don't trust what your doctor has prescribed or doesn't feel right, I recommend getting a second opinion.
