I have severe right ankle pain on the left side of my ankle. It feels like my ligaments/tendons are pulling when I try to stretch my foot out. It hurts like crazy when I walk on it, I'm constantly limping. It aches all the time and it does swell some on the left side. I wear specially made arch supports in my shoes that were given to me fo supposed tendonitis because my arches are flat, but obviously this hasn't helped. I guess I'm wondering what kind of doctor I should go to and if anyone has any suggestions to what this might be? Thanks.
You most likely have tendon issues for sure, sounding like posterior tibial tendon. If you do a search on here, you'll find lots who have had that surgery (if that's where you end up) and what they've done before they get to that point.
As for the pain you describe -- that's me to a "T" only mine is on the outside ankle (peroneal tendons). I've had an MRI and find out tomorrow what's up (I hope!).

I had that exact pain also for a long time but despite orthotics, physical therapy and being very careful it just kept getting worse..I also had flat feet and was told i had posterior tendon dysfunction the year before...finally had an MRI which showed a torn posterior tibial tendon...after 3 docs and a lot of wasted time, I went to a podiatric surgeon and had flat foot reconstruction..it's a huge surgery as you will see on the posts here. Hopefully you have gotten to whatever is going on in your ankle early..do not wait because it will not get better on it's own..find a great doctor that can help you. Best of luck
Well I had my MRI on Monday and it showed inflamed tendons and a fluid build up in my joints of my ankle, so yesteday I went to a specialist and mine is the posterior tibial tendon that is the problem. He gave me a cortizone shot in the tendon (ouch) and has set me up for physical therapy, which starts Friday. I really liked the doctor so hopefully I'm headed in the right direction. The shot has seemed to help a little. I've had trouble at different times with both ankles so I don't know what I'd do if it happened with both ankles at the same time. Keep me informed of things that have helped with you all, any suggestions are appreciated. I'd really prefer not to have surgery, which he didn't even mention at this point. Thanks so much.
Girlnairb: I just had a cortisone shot in the peroneal tendon, and I agree ... OUCH! It was very very painful and sore once the anesthetic wore off that they inject with it, and very sore for 3 days after. Then seemed to improve a little, but now I'm bummed as it seems like it's not improving anymore. Still quite sore, especially near the bottom of my foot where it goes under the foot.
My doctor never mentioned surgery either and the MRI supposedly showed no tears (he didn't have the report but had talked to the radiologist). I will go in the next week to my GP here to see what the full report said.
I did PT before the shot and it didn't help much, but am thinking of trying it again to see if anything happens this time along with the shot...
michlei: I start physical therapy tomorrow and will see how that goes. The shot went well it does seem some better and I'm able to walk almost normal. I'm like you though the bottom of my foot is a bit sore. I've gotten so used to limping I'm trying to keep myself from it, so I can tell better if its improved. Let me know how everything is going with you. My doctor said something about ultrasound therapy, do you have any idea what that is. Hope to hear from you soon, good luck.
Well I had my first ultrasound therapy and can't tell much difference from that yet but they said it could take a few times to be able to tell. I am walking normally now, but my worst problem is when I try to extend my foot down or stretch it out like I'm pointing it, the muscle/tendon on the inside of my right ankle feels like it's pulling and not in a good way, it really hurts, and it's also still very sore to the touch in spots. I'm doing calf stretches and all with the therapy as well. She tried to get me to extend my foot out the other day and I couldn't do it with out extreme pain, I have not trouble bending my foot upwards it's the other way thats the problem. Have you all experienced this. Let me know how things are going with you.
