Sudden pain in right foot and ankle with stabbing pain

I posted about this in the general health section but didn't get any replies. Last Tuesday, my right foot and ankle became very sore all of a sudden. I didn't fall over or do anything overly strenuous. Infact, I couldn't think of any reason why my foot would become so sore so suddenly.

It started on Tuesday afternoon at work. My ankle became very painful and it hurt to walk on it but I could still walk on it. When I got home, I tried massaging my foot and ankle and it helped. I woke up during the night because my foot and ankle were extremely painful. I took some ibuprofen but it didn't help at all. In the morning, I tried a heated wheat bag on my ankle but it didn't help. I went to work but as the day went on, my ankle and foot became even more painful. I had stabbing pains and it literally felt like someone had stabbed me with a knife in the foot. That night, the pain was excruciating and I even considered going to the emergency department at the hospital. I tried a heated wheat bag again and then some deep heat cream. I also took more ibuprofen. Somehow, I managed to get to sleep and the next day, the pain was slightly better. The pain has slowly got better over the last fe days. Its Sunday now and I've still got some pain but its not too bad. I haven't taken any ibuprofen at all today.

I was worried that I might have a bone infection or something, after reading about my symptoms online. Now I think it was just a sprain or strain but I've never experienced anything so painful before. I was also worried because I had stabbing pains and because it came on so suddenly. Does anyone know what this could be? Obviously its not an infection because I didn't have a fever or anything but why did the pain come on so suddenly and so bad??

Also, my ankle was very swollen and the swelling spread across the top of my foot to the other side of my ankle. Its gone down a lot now but its still slightly swollen.

Re: Sudden pain in right foot and ankle with stabbing pain

Please see an orthopedist. It could be a number of things. Your symptoms are reminiscent of what I had when I tore my posterior tibial tendon. Get it checked out as soon as you can as. Letting it go is not a good idea.

Re: Sudden pain in right foot and ankle with stabbing pain

I always explained my arthritis pain like a knife being put in my foot and then twisted. It could be a number of things though. Get it checked out. Good luck.

It could be your tore something and didn't notice, or it could be you have some form of inflammatory arthritis. Call your doctor Monday morning and make an appointment.

Re: Sudden pain in right foot and ankle with stabbing pain

Ice it rather than put heat on it for the pain and swelling, but I agree it does sound like you injured it somehow, maybe by twisting it without realizing it. See a podiatrist or a GP as soon as you can, you don't want to just let it go to get worse. Good luck.
