muscle spasms at night in feet

For a long time now I have been having muscle spasms in my feet at night. The spasms wake me up so that I have to walk them off. To remedy this, I started taking 300 mg of magnesium in the morning and at night. This helped the night spasm problems BUT in yoga class, now I get foot spasms!

To top it off, when I wake up in the morning and if I lie down during the day, the bottom of my feet really hurt for the first few steps. After walking just a bit, this pain goes away. I thought taking calcium with vitamin D would fix it, but it has not.

Any idea about (1) nightly foot muscle spasms and/or painful bottom of feet after lying down?

I have had bad lower back problems from a fall on the ice in March 2011, abaout 4.5 months ago. Am working on the lower back pain with chiropractor, massage and yoga.

But what about foot muscle spasms at night and hurting feet after lying down?
Many thanks.

Re: muscle spasms at night in feet

The pain at the bottom of the foot first thing in the morning, that could be plantar fasciitis. One possible treatment is to stretch the calves BEFORE getting out of bed in the morning.

Muscle spasms could be caused by a lot of things. What kind of shoes do you wear? Do they support your arches well?

thanks for your help. its the bottom of my feet that hurt in the morning and i thought calcium would help and it did, but stopped. i'll try stretching my feet before getting out of bed. i do think it is internally a problem--reaction to a vitamin or medicine or lacking something. what do you think? and thanks for your reply.
