foot pain-front of foot

Hi,

about a week and a half ago I twisted my ankle. I didn't think anything of it as I was able to walk normally without pain after a minute or so. the next day however, I felt a lot of pain on the outside part of my left foot, towards the toes. here's a picture showing where it hurts:

a few days ago it was really bad, to a point where I couldn't put any pressure on my left foot at all, besides the heel. now, however, i'm able to walk but only if I over-pronate my left foot.

up until now, i've been using RICE and taking ibuprofen. this hasn't helped a whole lot, and I doubt i'd be able to run or walk a long distance without a lot of pain. I can put some pressure on it, but not a whole lot.

any ideas as to what this could be and what I could do for now? i'll see when I can schedule an appointment with my doctor.

thanks.

Re: foot pain-front of foot

Could be a stress fracture.
Could be a stress fracture.
if that's the case then i'm assuming the only thing I could do is stay off my foot for a while. is this correct?

Definitely rest will help! A stiff soled surgical shoe might let you walk without pain, though.

Get an x-ray and see what happens.

Re: foot pain-front of foot

I highly doubt it is a stress fracture as those occur due to a repetitive stress, not an acute one like twisting your ankle. What it could be is a true fracture, even if hairline. My son fractured his 5th metatarsal by twisting his ankle. It is possible to avulse a fragment of bone this way. Get an x-ray, which will show a fracture, unlike a stress fracture that does not appear on a plain film for many weeks.

I was playing handball every day (a couple of hours) for about a week before I twisted my ankle. my foot never actually bothered me until the day after I twisted my ankle.

i'll try to get an x-ray soon, but assuming it is a fracture, should I still stay off my foot?

i've also noticed with some light walking it got a bit better. this morning when I woke up it was pretty bad, but I walked for a little bit and I don't feel it too much except for when I bias my weight over to that part of the foot.

thanks everyone.

Re: foot pain-front of foot

If it is a true fracture, the doctor will advise you, but you could be looking at 6 wks in a walking boot even for a small one.

Re: foot pain-front of foot

I didn't get an x-ray YET, but yesterday I played a few softball pick up games with some friends. my foot didn't bother me at all during or after. it was pretty bad again when I woke up this morning, but I walked around for a bit and it went away for the most part.

I realize running on my foot after a week or so of inactivity wasn't exactly the best thing to do, but why is it that when I sit at home and do nothing it's most painful?
