recovery austin ostomy/bunionectomy

I had an austin ostomy 6 weeks ago and am still in boot -- will have x rays monday when dr comes in from out of town. My foot is still very swollen and hurts. Does a sock in the boot help reduce swellng? I can only do one thing/day, such as go to the grocery, or get my haircut, and that's it for the day. Talked to the nurse yesterday and she indiciated this wasn't normal. Am I ever going to be normal again? I substitute teach and I can't even imagine going back to school at this point? Trying very hard not to be discouraged.
