toe numbness

I am in good health, midl age, no real probs. But one toe has been numb on one foot for much of the last year. The doc (local med center during complete phys) thought it was a nerve prob and didn't say much more. Now a toe is starting numbness on the other foot. The other symptom is when I sleep and one leg crosses the other and I move the legs during sleep, an intense pain runs from the numb toe area, like the nerve and/or blood supply is reactivating. Kinda like frost bite when the feeling comes back. It's all tolerable now but I'm wondering where this is headed. Who do I see? Foot doc? Neurologist? Another GP? and how concerned should I be? I am def not looking for intense meds/surgery or other just due to a numb toe, unless this is symptomatic of bad things to come!
