Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

I am currently 5 weeks post op bunionectomy/osteotomy and 2nd metatarsal osteotomy. I had some permanent hardware put in the bones. So everything was going great the first couple of weeks, not much pain, and wound was healing well.
Then, at 3 weeks post op I developed severe pain and fever and was diagnosed with a deep staph infection and the wound split right open. So now I am on high dose antibiotics for at least 4 weeks and feel constantly ill and sick. I am having daily dressing changes as its still weeping pus.
Has anyone experienced infection after bunion surgery? How long did it take to clear and for things to get back to normal? I am pretty worried this will affect the healing process overall and no-one seems to have any answers at the hospital here, just vague mumblings about 'lets wait and see'! Gotta love the NHS!

Re: Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

Dear Cathlondon: I can understand your being worried given the bout of having an infection after the surgery. My situation did not reach the infection stage but three week after my bunion surgery with permanent pins, the wound where the pins were inserted was not healing and there was lots of drainage, so the surgeon on the third post op referred me to a plastic surgeon/wound care. She cleaned out the wound and scraped out the dead skin. I continued to clean the wound daily with a saline solution and applying an antibacterial ointment. By the end of the fifth week I was happy to say the incision is almost healed. The coloring that we are all looking for is pink. I am sharing my story because I believe that my surgeon was concerned about an infection setting in because the wound was not healing thus the extra precautions were taken. I continued to take antibiotics which gave me side effects because I was on them too long.

Maybe you might want to discuss with your surgeon whether seeing a wound care specialist would be helpful while your infection is being treated given that you still have continuous drainage. Are you advised to dress your wound daily? I have to admit the healing process is a challenge for the foot and the trauma it has experienced as a result of the surgery. It is also a mental challenge to remain positive and to know that eventually we are going to be able to walk again. Hopefully with less pain. I have not answered your question but I just want you to know you are not alone in your concerns and hopefully you are not in pain. Ask more questions of your health provider. Responses from them deserve more than just "let us wait and see." Feel better.

Re: Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

Thank you so much for your response Profmia. It is very encouraging to hear that your incision is almost healed and hopefully you will not have to go through any further cleaning out as that must have been very unpleasant for you. Did they clean out your wound under general anaesthetic?
Here in the UK we are treated under the National Health Service which means we don't really have much of a say in what treatment we get or which surgeon we end up with. There is no woundcare specialist, I have my dressings changed daily at my local doctors surgery. It is still draining pus and all sorts of muck coming out but has improved slightly.

I guess I was just one of those unlucky ones that got an infection. I am keeping positive by getting lost in good books, films, and daytime TV!
I am fed up with the high dose antibiotics as they make me so sick and give me side effects too but hopefully they are doing the job and attacking the staph infection.

I hope you continue to have a good recovery and keep your spirits up x

Re: Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

Dear Cathlondon: I googled for some information an saw where both Good Samaritan and Whipps Cross University Hospital both have wound care speciality I don't know if either are a part of your National Health Services or not. Believe me the latter is far better than here because this whole process is costing a fortune. Thank goodness I have employee health insurance but the co-payments are a real burden. You pay for getting the best health care here in the US. Many People just die from simple staff infections because they don't have health insurance and so many public hospitals have just closed down. Anyway enough of my political views but knowing that you have good doctors and getting good care is a GREAT PART of the healing process. As I mentioned the high dosages of antibiotics had grave side effects for me ...that bordered last week end on an emotional crisis. So I am off of them and I am healing. I am wearing an Aircast boot up to my knees and can walk with the aid of crutches on my heel. I go back for 6 week post op this week and hopefully I will be placed in another kind of walking shoe that allows me to be more wt. bearing. I have to change my own bandages daily and thus can see my foot looking more human :-).
Yes, keep busy with mind things, if you can get outside for some fresh air that is good for the healing, no direct sun because of the antibiotics. Lots of fruit in your diet and water to keep your system irrigated. I too hope for you a speedy recovery. Remember as I did not internalize, the healing process for the foot can be s--l-o--w.

Smile Wound Care After Bunion Reconstructive Foot Surgery

Hello Everyone:
There is light at the end of the tunnel, at least I am beginning to see it! I am eight and a half weeks post op. Still wearing the big boot. The top incision finally healed and the plastic surgeon suggested I do daily moisturizer rubs. I am using shea butter and vitamin E. I had 5 visits with the wound care doctor. I go back to surgeon in two weeks. Hopefully I will be out of the boot. The impact of walking in the boot has affected my entire right side. I still have swelling in the foot and ankle area, and it feels stiff in some areas. With the swelling I find that I have to keep my foot up much like I did after the surgery. The big toe is still very stiff but PT has helped a lot relative to the edema. The good news is I can walk with a cane and my mental state has improved because I have regained some control over my ability to do things for myself, like taking a bath, preparing simple meals and walking steadier. [/LIST]

Re: Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

That is great news for you Profmia! So pleased to hear that things are improving for you at last and at least you are getting back to normal activity which in turn improves mental state.
My current situation is that although my incisions have now healed, I have been left with severe internal scarring, nerve damage and deformity from the infection. I cannot bear any weight on my foot and cannnot walk at all. This has been a long 3 months and I know there is a lot further to go with no guarantee of ever walking normally again. Still in a wheelchair and having PT but living in hope!

Death Cathlondon:
I was wondering how you were doing. I am so sorry to hear of the dreadful state you now find yourself in after the surgery. What are the doctors saying about future healing? It appears that your wound was not properly taken care of. Hopefully you will recover in time. Envision yourself walking in light. Peace, Profmia

I am going through this right now. Please tell me what they did. I had a second surgery to clean out the infection, but it came back after they took me off the antibiotics

Re: Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

Sorry to hear you are going through infection problems Sheri. How long did you take the antibiotics for, and what type are they?
My staph infection cleared up after 5 weeks of antibiotic treatment and has not returned yet (I am now 6 months post-op). However, at the time, I was given massive doses of two types of the strongest antibiotics so they hit it hard and fast right at the beginning.

As you may have read on my earlier posts, the infection has left me with debilitating scar tissue and I am still unable to fully weight bear or walk properly. But on the bright side I do not have a bunion anymore!

I am still having regular PT and will probably have more surgery in the near future to try and remove the scar tissue that the infection caused.

I know how worried you must be, it is really a horrible thing to experience. But once they can get the proper antibiotic regime in place, it will be the road to recovery for you. Let us know.

Profmia, how you doing now? I hope you are well and have your mobility back x

Re: Anyone had infection after bunion surgery?

I was on Cipro? and clindamyacin from 12/15 to 1/ 20. On 1/9 they went back in and flushed in with antibiotics and put an antibiotic paste on the bone. He said to stop taking the antibiotics to see if the infection would come back, he said I would know within 3 days, on the 3rd day it started getting a little red and sore. I'm not suppose to see him till the 30, but I'm getting in to see hime today. I feel this will never heal! It's really starting to scare me and now my work tells me I have to return to work next week, or I'm probably going to loss my job. I can walk, thats not too bad. I just feels funny between my toes. I had bunion and they removed my big toe joint too so I had a screw for my toe and can't bend it anymore. So all my toes are stiff feeling. I just wish we can find a solution to this- it seems like it'll never end. Thank you so much for responding

!

Try not to worry sherri, its still early days for you and I am sure things will eventually become right. I remember feeling like you myself, in that I thought it was never going to end! I really feel for you as I know how worrying it is.

Some helpful advice that a nurse gave me was this..she told me to make sure I ate natural foods wherever possible, plenty of fruit and vegetables, cut right back on sugar and carbs, and alcohol (infections can thrive on those), and to grab as much sleep as possible as healing is faster during deep sleep.
I also kept my leg elevated all the time to stop the blood pooling in my foot and to ease the swelling.

I have also heard from others in the same situation that manuka honey works miracles for infections such as these.

My toes are all still stiff and do not move and I have screws in my toes also. I think stiffness is pretty much standard and normal for up to a year after surgery, regardless of infection or not. I do hope your work is more understanding of what you are having to deal with. Keep us posted!
