Heel Injury - Bruise? Fracture? Ouch!

Wearing sandles, I fell about 5-6 feet landing on pavement straight onto my right heel. The first two days I could not put any weight on the foot without having severe pain.

I iced it a bit, tried to stay off it and now by day 5, I feel its getting a bit better (a very small bit). I can actually stand directly on it gingerly but walking is still very painful (especially in the mornings). It's almost as though the pain has moved from the heel to the side of my foot. To the touch, the pain is not at the bottom of the foot but about half an inch up on either side.

I haven't experience any bruising or swelling. I've been using a gel heel pad inside my sneakers which makes it feel a bit better while using the side of my foot to get around.

I guess my question is whether this sort of thing could be a fracture or just a bruise? How long should I wait until considering X-rays (I have health insurance but its terrible). Praying its just a bruise and I'll wake up one day and all will be healed (no pun intended).

Gosh...if it is that painful, I'd get it checked out right away. Good luck and keep us posted!

Get it x-rayed now. You don't want to mess with a calcaneus fracture.

You really should make an appointment with a foot and ankle specialist or ortho to get it checked out. Even if the bone is ok there are still tendons and ligaments to consider.
