My sprained ankle is actually broke, will it ever heal?

So I found out my sprained ankle that wouldn't heal after many months and 2 doctors is broken. Apparently the first guy didn't see the bone chip in the x-rays, or it wasn't there to begin with, but it's here now! So I've been walking on a broken ankle (malleolus chipped) for 2-6 months. I don't have (and really haven't had) any swelling or bruising. Just hurts.

I've been in ankle brace for 4 weeks now & doing PT 2X a week. It still hurts. The trip down 5 flights of steps during the earthquake evac last week didn't help. My OS is pushing conservative treatment, but I'm wondering how long this is going to take to heal. I'm having a hard time seeing how this chip floating around is going to find it's way home. OS & PT wont give any time frame, and haven't said anything optimistic. Has anyone else been through anything like this? Surgery while single isn't my first choice, but I've been dealing with this for 28 weeks and am really ready to be done with this!
