born with flat feet, supports hurt and balance thrown off

have had flat feet my whole life, even podiatrist who saw me for hammer toe said my feet were incredibly flat. I was forced as a kid to wear shoes that killed my feet, with supports etc..I hate shoes.
I have forced my self in my adult years to wear arches, sometimes getting blisters on my arches.
I wear my well broken in birkenstocks but new birkenstocks sometimes result in blisters on my arches.
I also notice when wearing arches, my balance gets thrown off. I feel like I am walking on the outside of my feet.
I have the typical outside wear patterns on my shoes, my feet do not roll in.
I dont know if it is really necessary I wear arches..I am 50.
I noticed with some new birkenstocks, I am getting hip pain, it feels like my leg is being torqued out...
very odd.
top of my one foot is sore in the AM.
I have had ankle surgery etc..
any ideas..? do I really need arch supports? I have done well with/without my entire life..is it really a necessary thing for people who were born with flat feet?

Re: born with flat feet, supports hurt and balance thrown off

Have you seen a foot and ankle specialist? It sounds as though your flat feet are now symptomatic. Maybe the supports you are currently wearing are not what your feet need. I was not born with flat feet but acquired them along the way. Tried over the counter supports which did not work. At the time I did not understand that the hip and back pain I had was due to my feet. I did not see a specialist until I had pain in my arch and ankle. Unfortunately things had progressed to far and the custom made orthotics did not work. Ultimately I had to have surgery to fix the problem.

Re: born with flat feet, supports hurt and balance thrown off

I hope this answer is not too late, but I have had flat feet for ages and have word orthotics, only to have the arch made much weaker. Just recently, I got into the hands of a therapists who told me to get rid of the arches and strengthen the arch. You have flat feet because the muscles in your ankles and feet are weak. What a difference I have seen since exercising my ankle and foot or feet in the correct way.

Sounds like you may need a bileral calcaneal osteotomy... I would research it. I have aquired flat foot on the right side and I had that surgery. I am 30 days post op and I now have a arch, but I am still in pain... It is something to look into, good luck.
