Hi everyone, on monday I had to have some glass cut out of my foot. It was on the outside of my left heel.. How long should I wait before I can begin running again? As of right now, I am trying to walk on my toes on that foot to avoid pain/ prevention of healing. Any help would be much appreciated. It was a pretty deep cut to get it out.
Did your physician tell you the recovery timeline? Was this done in the office, ER, or operating room?
Typically, an incision heals in 2-3 weeks, but there is always a risk or reopening the area with high impact activity such as running. Without knowing what the area looks like exactly or knowing the extent of the procedure to remove the glass, I would give it a minimum of one week. Let pain be your guide. If it feels better when walking, then try some light jogging. If it hurts when jogging, then your body is telling you the area is not ready for that yet. A cut or incision can take much, much longer to heal when there is constant shearing forces, which are common during walking and running. If the area isn't healing, you are probably doing too much.

Did you get stitches? I myself would wait till healed becaused of the friction between the heel/foot and shoe no matter how minimal. Good luck
Thanks for the replies guys! It was done in the office and there are no stitches.. They didn't give me much information on it at all which I thought was rather strange... Just the minimal "stay off it and take some ibuprofin as needed and she rushed out as the office had a lot of call ins that day and she was rather busy. I tried to call up there and the nurse just said she didn't know and would ask the Dr. and call me back but she hasn't and now my office is closed till monday. It is a little less sore today, which has been 3 full healing days so I am hoping by monday I can at least go on a long walk. I have not been doing anything that I absolutely don't have to do that could get in the way of it healing. Unfortunately, I still have to go to class and that does involve walking around the campus a little bit, but I do not think that has made it any worse. So it typically takes a week or two for this kind of incision to heal? Thanks again!
Since you didn't need sutures it sounds like there wasn't an incision made to remove the glass. It was probably just "dug" out for lack of a better word. As a reference, surgical incisions using suture take approx 2 weeks until it has reached 50% of its normal strength. That is why sutures are typically taken out around 2 weeks. If there wasn't an incision, you should be less worried about it re-opening. See how you do on Monday and take it from there. If walking to class hasn't made it any worse than you can probably feel safe slowing walking a little more.
