Went in yesterday for big toe fusion and small toe k-wire. Came out with Flexion to Extensor Tendon of Toes, soft tissue surgery on toe joints and exploration of joint NEC, whatever that all means. I know that it hurts like mad and that I have to be completely NWB for at least 6 weeks!!! This wasn't in my plans so I am not very prepared. Oh well, at least I have some previous experience!
What were your plans when you anticipated going in for a big toe fusion?
If it is a fusion of the main toe joint (metatarsal-phalangeal joint), your NWB would have been 6 weeks as well. If it was the joint further out on the toe, then no real NWB period is needed. Why was there such a big change the day of surgery?
Yes, he fused the first joint and transferred the tendon lower down. His reasoning is that as the R foot has already had triple arthrodesis it would be better for my balance/co-ordination, to have some movement in the big toe. Also because my L foot is weak and suffering badly. (Bi-lateral talipes equinovarus) He's very understanding of my condition and I trust him to do what's best
Joy of joys........I will be having all 3 wires removed on my birthday!! One of them has embedded itself so he'll have to "dig" for it. I'm then looking forward to subtalar fusion of the L foot, using a bone graft and another big toe procedure, (as yet not determined). Hopefully this won't be too soon.
Cloud: I am so sorry to hear you needed more surgery and now another surgery after you recover! I'm not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing to have been through it and know what to expect. Make sure you keep your foot elevated and take the pain pills.
