Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

I also read on here, someone saying how nobody understands because we look normal. My brother asked me yesterday to babysit today for 9 hrs, two toddlers in addition to my 2 yr old. I just updated him on my condition and he doesnt get it. I said no of course but my husband even asks me if I can bring the baby upstairs when he doesnt feel like it and he was upset because he wanted me to go to court with him yesterday and I said no. He was there for 6 hrs. I know I couldve muscled through it but the idea of doing any unnecessary standing/walking terrifies me. He sees my condition everyday and doesnt fully get it. If i stay off my feet for a day, i have about 10 minutes standing with little pain. I know it heals a lil in that time but never enough. I dont have the luxury of staying off of them constantly. So most of the time, they just hurt between bad and worse. When I work for a few hours, I cannot walk afterward. I will literally fall. They are very unstable anyways. They give out from underneath me constantly. I have fallen a number of times since the surgery... scary. I saw a podiatrist (best one around my city) and he doesnt know what to say except there are no drs around here who can help me. Did I mention that we have three major hospitals in the city? Teaching hospitals no less. I have to go to Boston to get help and my car is old and in disrepair. I have difficulty driving, no money, and winter is coming. My tires are all on fix a flat. Bald as babies too. What is a girl to do? One day at a time, I know. I just get the feeling from everyone I ask to help me that they dont want to. Drs, friends, family, government... Im fighting for every little bit I get. This is a battle of a lifetime.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

I totally understand what you're going through Severity. I lost my job when I took medical leave and now without insurance. I am past the point where I can get a policy without waiting a year for a pre-existing condition and my situation isn't getting any better.

Times are definitely tough. If I were in your area I would offer to take you to your appointments. I am not working and always home. I feel for you. I cannot imagine being in that much pain and having to walk on that. Maybe if you call everyday they might have a cancellation and can get you in before Halloween. Sounds like you could use to get help ASAP. Please don't hesitate to message if you need to vent or talk. I know it helps talking to people who can relate to your situation.

Take care!

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

So I finally get a call from my os physicians assistant, he says everything is fine with my foot. I was so stunned i forgot to ask about my treatment plan for left foot. Now i can wait another 5 days for a call back. He said the technicians dont know how to read the mri. Says i can come in again if i want to. ***? I don't even want to return to that hospital, so discouraged. I do want some accountability. Three wks ago, I could stand for three hours with virtually no pain, now Im in tears the minute i get out of bed. Whats going on? Why cant anyone give me answers? Why do they make so much money when they are not helping me?

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

Kimberly, how long ago did you leave your job? I'm sure you checked into it but just in case, was Cobra not available? Could you try to get it retroactively?

Severity, have you checked into any community outreach services? There may be some financial help or medical advice available. It never hurts to ask. Also, check with the hospital you will be using. They very often have sliding scales or even free services for those with financial challenges. Exhaust every resource you can think of and ask the people you talk to if there is anyone else they could refer you to.
Good luck. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

I simply couldn't afford cobra. It was over $300 a month and I am only bringing in $600 on unemployment I wouldn't be able to pay bills.

Severity: I recently had a ct scan that was over $1000and the financial aid at the hospital paid my entire bill. Definitely worth looking into. Sounds like you should get a second opinion if your current doctor isn't helping you. There has to be something to help

Take care!

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

Severity, I was just wondering how you are doing. I have been contemplating flat foot surgery. I have very flexible flat feet as well. I would like to have no boney work done and just tendon work to fix my problem but am scared it wouldn't be enough. Has your pain gotten any better? I have been to a lot of foot surgeons and none of them said only tendon/ligament work would fix my problem. It has always been osteotomies and naviculocuneiform fusion as well. Anyway I hope you are doing better.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

Hi MVB. I am not doing well. Had to stop working a week ago. My feet are worse everyday. I am awaiting the surgery to incorporate bonework. They say my transferred tendons are now torn and I probably need a triple arthrodesis. Im scared, stressed and anxious to get on with it. I miss my life. I know the idea of bonework is scary, but having to go through this again is torture, physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. Do find a specialist. I have been to 7 doctors so far.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

When I was having problems with my torn PT tendon I began researching flat foot reconstruction surgery. From what I read they say that tendon work alone usually fail. They do the osteotomy in order to put less stress on the newly transferred tendons and help create an arch. I believe that this is called the All American Flatfoot reconstruction surgery. Don't be afraid of the bone work. I will admit that it hurt really bad at first and I was dependent on the pain meds to get through the pain. After a few months the heel pain goes away.
Severity, I am so sorry to hear about what you are going through. I know how rough it was to have to face the surgery the first time, and can only imagine what you are going through. I hope they finally get it right this time so you can get your life back. We are all rooting for you.

It is amazing how hard it is on a person to not be able to walk. When you can, it's not that big a deal. When you can't, it is one of the most difficult things you will ever face.

I am a very independent person who is not good at asking for help. Realizing that if I didn't have someone with me to help with little things then it wasn't going to happen. Things like getting a glass of water. It was very humbling.

It's pretty easy to slip into a "how much longer is this going to go on, I'm never going to walk again" frame of mind. I remember one night where I all but threw my crutches across the bedroom because I was just so darn frustrated at not being able to walk.

I hope that you can get someone who can help fix your ankles/feet so that you can start walking again.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

Im so grateful for everyones support. Im having two afo's made, still waiting for surgery. Wont be this month. They wont be ready for 4 to 6 wks either. What to do in the meantime? Vicodin and sit as much as possible. Try to appreciate the time I have now that others dont. To relax, be with my kids, to reflect. Its got its advantages, but I miss the balance. Too much time to relax and reflect is dangerous, psychologically. Thats why I appreciate this message board so much. Keeps me sane. Thanks everybody.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

I agree with you, this site has really helped me through the hard times of my foot injury and subsequent surgery. No one can truly understand what it is like to go through the long recovery process post surgery untill they have gone through it themselves.
Too much time to relax and reflect truly is a two edged sword. I have been out of work for two years now recovering from my injuries. My life has been greatly impacted, and I haven't been able to do the things I need to do or want to do. I even gained 40 lbs, and I'm not happy about that. I get so bored, and every night becomes movie night, including snacks.lol My IPad has become worth it's weight in gold too.
I wish you well, and I hope you can get the surgery done before the holidays. I also hope you get that brace soon too. I don't know why it has to take so long to get them. I have been waiting since the end of August to get my USB orthotics. I finally got fitted up for them and waiting for them to call.

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

My new surgeon was really trying to avoid me for a couple of weeks. I didn't understand why until I finally pestered him so much that his staff began to question why he wasnt returning my calls. He relayed back to me that he doesn't know what to do with my feet yet. So I have an appt for 11/26 which is a pre pre op. To discuss it. Thats scary. Hes the top flat foot reconstruction dr in boston and does not know what to do. He has a couple weeks to figure it out. As special as it makes me feel, I literally wish I was in someone elses shoes right now. I would love to wait too, til he feels comfortable but I am so uncomfortable right now. I cant keep waiting. My life is passing me by. I have gained weight too, and struggle with it. My self esteem cant suffer much more. I dont know why they did not give me something for the wait... ace bandages, generic braces, something. My feet are killing me!

Re: pttd pre op tomorrow

Perhaps you should continue looking for doctor who IS comfortable with this procedure. This is a big deal and you need a doctor that is confident. Seriously, if you have to wait a little bit longer, do. It is hard enough to recover from this anyway.
