Broken foot and ankle after a fall

Friday night I fell down the stairs. My right ankle rolled and hurt so bad. It swelled up and I could put no pressure on it. My left foot (outside, under tghe pinkie toe) was swollen and hurt. Long story short? The ER doctor said I broke my left foot and right ankle. He put my left foot in a boot and fiberglass cast on the right. I asked how long it would take to heal, he said 5-6 weeks. He told me to follow up with an orthopedic doctor as soon as possible.

Here is my question, for anyone who has broken these bones before, how long for these to heal completely? I have two toddlers and a military husband. I need to plan for some help because I can't at all right now. How long will I be out of commission?

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

Oh Gosh, so sorry to hear that this happened to you. My MIL, broke her right foot, and left ankle. She is in a rehab facility, though she doesn't have two toddlers to care for you. It will probably take about 6-8 weeks to get better. Did you brake the outside or inside of your ankle? I have had some medical issues lately and I have a two year old home with me all day. It's very hard and frustrating to deal with all of this. I hope you can get some help, and maybe PT.

Thanks so much. I broke the outside of my right ankle. It was swollen really really bad. My left foot is also the outside.

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

My MIL broke the outside of her ankle also so no need for surgery. Then it was the top of her foot so that is in a boot. She has been in rehab for about three weeks, and progressing very nicely. But it will take a lot more time to heal.

I broke bones in midfoot and had a Lisfranc injury and had to have surgery. Is there any bruising on the bottom? Did you get to an orthopedist or a foot and ankle surgeon? It's nice to meet you. My story is I fell down the steps, like you, but broke three bones in my foot. I had to have ORIF surgery, and my foot was straightened with the help of plates and screw. I was non-weight bearing for 12 weeks. In two weeks, I will get the hardware out and have a second surgery,

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

Hi. That is a mighty good question - and it is mine too. (I wish I had an answer for us.) I broke my left ankle falling down a flight of stairs on June 26. I was given only the response of "six weeks" by the doctor and a non-walking cast. With small children to take care of I would imagine that a two month window would be required for assistance to you, especially as you have injured both legs....but that is just a guess. Fortunately my kids are grown, because it is tough enough to manage taking care of myself. I wish you timely care for your kids and loving family around you.

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

I have some brusing on the bottom of my foot, most bruising is on the top. I have an appointment with an orthopedic doctor today. Thanks for replying, it's nice to know someone is on the down slope and I will get through this

The emergency room doctor didn't tell me. On my paper work it just says metatarsal fracture. It's on the outside of my foot, I think. That is where the pain and the swelling is and most of the bruising (although the brusing has spread.) Today, I see an orthopedic doctor and he can tell me more I suppose.

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

Hi. I just wanted to give a brief update of my broken L. Ankle from June 26, in case it has relevance. Saw specialist today, had xray first which confirmed two broken bones "I don't like the look of those breaks" were his words. Hmmm. well, me neither. Despite that assessment, upon seeing that there was a decrease in swelling, and upon my assertion that I could not do stairs with the current cast (plus it is getting rather itchy in the summer weather) I was able to buy (no, not covered by Canadian Health plan)a Boot. This walking cast was surprisingly not painful to get inserted into (after a tight compression stocking helped further decrease swelling so it could be pushed toes towards me more to fit the boot)and I have already found amazing increased freedom. It was so hard to stand up without putting pressure on my injured leg - even just enough pressure to balance myself.
Anyway, 5 more weeks of this cast before my next appointment and I must wear this cast unless I open it to clean my leg. As the cast technician noted, the challenge that this type of walking cast brings is from being able to take it off and then have that total vulnerability of the injured limb. I assured them I will take care...and I will. I will not push it. If it hurts I will stop putting pressure on it. I definitely feel a small victory with increased mobility.
I hope you start to see some of those same small "wins" in your road to recovery. I do see why they say that "information is power" because the more I know about what is going on the better I feel able to cope with it.

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

Here is an update: I went to see the doctor. I will not have to have surgery, Yay! She kept me in the splint because I am too swollen for a cast. She refilled my pain meds and advised me to keep my leg elevated so that she can get in me in either a cast or a boot next week. I am in still quite a bit of pain but I am getting through it and my mom has traveled 1100 miles to help me. Now, just hoping to get the swelling down, I am not having much luck! Thanks for all of your responses. It was really nice to hear from all of you.

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

Good to hear that you don't need surgery. My MIL has been in a cast about 4-5 days after she broke her ankle. She is about 4 weeks out now, and she is making great progress. She leaves rehab on friday. She has a boot on her cast so she can weight-bear a little bit. Good luck to you.

Re: Broken foot and ankle after a fall

From personal experience, and reading others across the internet, it could be anywhere from 3 months to a year or more before you can get a really good idea of what the outcome will be. Don't rush it. If you smoke, stop! Smoking negatively affects bone growth and healing. Follow the doctor's directions to the letter, but pay attention to your body. You are the best judge of pain, so listen to what it's telling you.

"On my paper work it just says metatarsal fracture. "

Probably 5th metatarsal. Quite common.
Outside ankle, probably fibula, also quite common.

Not needing surgery is terrific! A guess would be 6-10 weeks.

MOST of these injuries heal good as new.

I hope you got some help, I can't imagine having toddlers to care for after a fall like that. I fell off my basement stairs going up & shattered the left heel & ankle 2 1/2 years ago. Still having problems with it. Wishing you the best for recovery.
