Toe nail issue?

Hi guys, I'm kind of worried about my toe nail basically a few months ago playing football someone stood on my toe, and it caused it to bleed underneath the nail and I thought I'd just leave it and hope it'd go away as I hate the doctors :S
But it hasn't, and I don't fancy the doctors as I've read they melt a hole into your nail and I passed out/blacked out whilst reading the procedure of it. Also, it seems like the nail (the white part you trim - don't know scientific name for it) has merged with the whole nail and it seems impossible to trim and gives off a bad smell. I can't go to the gym or anything with this, it's embarrassing.
Just wondering if anyone could help me out? Please?

Re: Toe nail issue?

Okay, bleeding under the nail usually isn't serious. The blood normally just sort of sits there until the nail grows all the way out. On a toenail, that takes months, but it doesn't really matter. Your toe still works, it just has a splotch of purple under the nail.

The white melding with the rest of the nail, though, that sounds like an ingrown toenail, maybe infected, if it smells bad. If the skin around it is red, swollen, hot and painful, then it is definitely infected.

Some nail clippers have a file attached, with a little point on the end. You can try to reach under the nail with it and clean it out. If you can't fix it on your own, though, you will have to have a doctor fix it, possibly a podiatrist.

Is an infection serious?

Re: Toe nail issue?

Some infections are serious. In a normal person, though, an infected toenail isn't an immediate problem, just something you need to deal with.

Re: Toe nail issue?

That's what I meant, a toenail infection :P
I think there maybe another nail underneath this one coming through though? :S

Re: Toe nail issue?

Ah, that's normal after your nail gets hit. Doesn't sound infected after all. Sometimes the nail "dies" so a new one has to grow in underneath. It'll take a long time, maybe up to a year, for it to look entirely normal again, but it will eventually. There's really nothing you can do to speed up the process, beyond keeping it reasonably clean.

Re: Toe nail issue?

It seems quite thin, I'm not sure if it is a nail but it doesn't seem like dirt or anything?
Shall I still try to clip/trim the nail that's merged into the actual bigger part? Or will that just cause a lot of pain? I've also got bleeding under my toe nail on the other large toe, but I can trim that nail and everything and there's no where near as much blood on the other one. Just bit concerned.

Re: Toe nail issue?

Basically, trim anything that comes loose or sticks out. Eventually the dead nail will actually come loose and fall off, like losing a baby tooth. It's a little disgusting, but just deal with it when it happens.

If there's just a little blood under the nail, you usually don't actually lose it.

Re: Toe nail issue?

Yeah my other one, doesn't seem like I'm gonna lose it, I'm not worried about that one as I can trim it perfectly!
And my nail has fell off before, probably when I was around about 10 actually, I dropped a little side plate on my toe and the plate smashed and the nail just came off, it was horrible :l
Thanks for the quick response, you've been so helpful!
Will a trip to the doctors be wasted do you think? Hate the doctors :-(

Sounds like there really isn't much they can do at this point.
