Extreme heel/ankle pain

My osteochondral lesion and torn ligaments have never been repaired. We are an army family and we had to move before the specialist felt like getting around to giving up on conservative measures.

So it didn't bother me much on the drive from Texas to Alaska, but then again we were in the car 8-12 hours.

recently, I have been experiencing extreme pain in the achilles annd peroneal areas - both areas where nothing was wrong. It feels better for a little while right after I get up, but the more I walk, the worse it gets. The pain really wears me out and I am pretty useless.

I have been taking my Mobic and using RICE measures to no effect. I called the military appointment line was unable to get an appointment in under 2 weeks. In the meantime, i was wondering if anyone had gone through something similar and had any home help suggestions. Or suggestions as to what the problem might be.

I really doubt I'll get much help through the military.

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

hi I don't know what the peroneal area is but I've had achilles reconstruction and ouch I know the pain you're dealing with. The more you're using it the more its getting inflammed. anyway you can get your hands on a camwalker boot? that's what you need to give your foot a break. stay off it as much as you can. you are just shredding it. i know that's grapic but its what happens when it gets inflammed I had mine completely torn and debrided and reattached and then your non weight bearing for like 8 weeks! so I'm serious. See an ortho if you can cj

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

I'll hunt around for the boot today. I wore one for 4 weeks while we were doing the conservative measures for the other issues. It is in one the boxes for my closet that I have not yet gotten to. I'll make it a priority today.

Yay moving <sarcasm sign>

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

I was able to get an appointment and the doctor put me back in the boot and told me to go back on crutches and to take my mobic.

I had referrals put in to see the orthopedist and for physical therapy. I see the ortho on Aug 15 and see PT on the 16th. We'll see where this goes.

Oh... and I start a new job on August 13th.

Ah, fun times!

Get your records from the other ortho, if you didn't bring them with you. Start now, because, due to privacy laws, there may have to be much paperwork back-and-forth to get them released. If you don't bring your records, you'll be starting from scratch with the new doctor.

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

I'm sorry you are having the new problems with your peroneals and your Achilles tendon. Did thr doctor you just saw say it was tendinitis? I've never had Achilles issues (other than extreme stiffness after both my surgeries), but I tore my peroneal brevis tendon and had tendinitis in it and both peroneals were subluxing. I also have torn my ATFL and CFLZ AND retinaculum a few times and have had those repaired twice. When my surgeon got in this past time in Feb, he told my husband my peroneal tendon was shredded! So definitely want to take care of it so it doesn't turn into more!! This has to be difficult with starting a new job 2 and 3 days before seeing your new ortho and PT! Is your ankle feeling better now that it's back in the boot and you are back on crutches?

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

The boot has been helpful. I confess to not using the crutches as much as I am supposed to. The Achilles area has stopped calling me names but the peroneal area has the same lingering pain it has had since all this started. MRIs showed nothing wrong with that area, but I suspect that a competent surgeon would get in there and see something interesting.

The doc that saw me for processing figured that my messed up ankle probably hadn't spontaneously healed itself miraculously on the drive from Texas to Alaska and since new places were hurting it was just smart to pass me over to orthopedics and physical therapy. I have all my own records with me so that should help.

I am hopeful that something will actually get done here, but it is all about timing and persistence.

I got chewed out (in a friendly, caring sort of way) today at the commissary because I waited in line instead of jumping ahead to the handicapped line. I told her I was sure I would make use of that perk after surgery, but for now, I just felt there were others in worse shape than me.

I don't do well with a lot of people being too sympathetic. It makes me feel weird.

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

hi, glad you're ankle is doing a bit better. I went ahead and got me a temporary handicap sticker during that time, it really helped. It is what it is, ya know? Still icing it in the evenings? I'm trying to remember they may have done an ultrasound on my ankle too but not sure. Maybe ask about that. I'm telling ya you do want to take all the conservative measures you can take to prevent the dreaded achilles tendon reconstruction. oh did I mention instead of the crutches I used a rolling knee walker instead of crutches because I have fibromyalgia and just can't handle the crutches. So much more convenient for getting around and easier on the bod. good luck and please keep us updated. cj

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

Hi Fiery! Just wanted to check up on you and see how your ankle is doing and how your pain level is and if there's any new developments in your treatment? I apologize for being scarce, but I'm on vacation. Guess where? I'm in your new location of Alaska!! What part did you move to? I probably either have already been there or will be going there. I will say the trip has been a bit stressful on my ankle, but it has helped it also. I know that doesn't make sense, but the strain has caused pain and swelling, but it's made it stronger. I've done some interesting things with it though like hike, zipline, and walk through snow/dog sled on glaciers! Anyway, thought you'd find it interesting that I'm in your new state and I really wanted to see how your ankle is!

Actually - it makes perfect sense to me. I didn't help to be all curled up in the car and not moving, but it was sure helpful to be in a non-weight bearing situation 8-12 hours a day on top of sleep time.

I am not back at school yet, so for the most part my ankle is not hurting as much because when I think I have done too much, I can stop, get out an icepack and plop on the couch. It won't be quite so easy once the students are back and I am on my feet more. Then again, my teaching schedule seems to be lighter than I am used to.

I think what set off my Achilles pain was when we were trying to go shoe-free on the new carpet. Bad bad idea. I also got tired of the wet seeping through my sneakers and I bought a pair ($$$!) of Redwing work-boots which have helped a LOT! They are a little sturdier than plain hiking boots. That and I found this essential oil combination at the fair that seems to have also helped a great deal. The proof positive will be when we get back to school full time.

I saw the new ortho at the army hospital yesterday. They lost my MRI films which I brought with me, so I get to schedule a new MRI. I will also do six weeks of PT with an option to extend three more weeks. The ortho sounded like she really knows her business and she listened to me (and understood my concerns about never wearing cute shoes ever again!). She is willing to do the surgery, but since it will take 5 weeks or soo to get in for an MRI, and I need to strengthen the surrounding ligaments anyway, we'll do PT in the meantime. She is also open to schedule the surgery near Christmas when I have two weeks off of school and won't miss as much time that way. This will be one our quieter Christmasses anyway. So I am hopeful and there is a plan with some contingency plans which makes me happy and hopeful.

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

Sounds like you have a good plan in place! I'm glad you like your new ortho and she's sensitive to your needs. Glad it isn't flaring up too bad! What are Redwings? I'm not familiar! Also what part of AK are you in? Anchorage? I'm home now and I'm so jealous you get to live there for a while! I'm already ready to go back!!

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

MRI's are not always accurate. My MRI did not show any problems with the peroneal tendon, in fact it said the were both intact and looked fine. My surgeon did not go by the MRI but said all symptoms were consistent with a tear and he was right. He went in and there was a tear.

Re: Extreme heel/ankle pain

MRIs are particularly unreliable with feet, because there are just so many little parts that overlap each other. My MRI was also false negative, and I was diagnosed on the basis of my surgeon's physical exam alone. (That negative MRI delayed my treatment for months, but I got better eventually.)
