Out of the boot!

Went to my follow up yesterday at 14 weeks out from PTTD surgery and got the OK to start wearing a shoe. The doctor said the x-rays look great and that now it's time to learn to walk again. I asked about a few different things and she said (which I loved) that I should start "using the foot like it's your foot again". She actually discouraged me from relying on crutches or a cane, she feels like the repair is very well healed and I need to get the foot working again as much as possible to increase the density that's been lost in the bones.

I'm pretty tentative with walking, and I am sure it will take time for me to get my gait back. I have a script for PT so I'll start that soon.

I can't say enough about how good it felt to be told that it's time to start the next phase of the healing process! I know it will take time for me to regain my strength and that there will be some pain, but it finally feels like this will be worth it.

Yay!

Re: Out of the boot!

It's so weird when something you used to do so naturally now feels so difficult and strange, isn't it? To have to WORK at walking, and consciously think about it?

When I tried the bike at PT for the first time the other day (with no resistance and very slowly), I got "stuck" every time my bad foot had to make it around the bottom cycle. I was able to smooth it out a bit after about 8 minutes, but it was still a bit jerky even then.

The thing I noticed the most was that it felt fantastic to put weight on the straightened KNEE of my bad leg. My right knee has spent so much time bent and kneeling over the past several months, that when I finally straightened it and put weight on it, it felt like the most wonderful stretch. I loved it.
