sesamoid fracture advice

i am 47 yr old male, x tremely active. teach crossfit, etc. just diagnosed with fractured sesamoid one week ago. in boot now. simply was told it was fractured via the xray and am really confused. dont know anything. which side how bad etc. i have read SO much about people delaying their lives waiting for this to heal, and i would just rather get on with the surgery frankly, because it seems that most end up getting surgery. read some threads here both good and bad, but wondering if, say, two years on, everything goes back to normal? thanks, any information appreciated as i am just starting this process and am confused.
