Cramps in Cast

hi everyone. first off, this board and all you wonderful people are just that---wonderful!

I had surgery on my calcaneus on 8/24, and on 9/4 was put into a fiberglass cast.

In the last few days (4 or so) my calf has started to really hurt, enough so that i can't sleep it's so painful. i have a little pain in my foot where the surgery was, but nothing compared to the calf. Is it just because of the muscle atrophy (which is pretty distinct, i've been non-weight bearing for a month and a half). I can't stretch it out because of the cast, and if i massage it behind me knee, where a lot of the pain originates, it starts to hurt worse. i have painkillers, but i'm trying to lessen my dependence on them...

any advice?

thanks!

I think the only advice for you is call the dr. The risk of blod clots is real and especilly pain behind the knee. Are you on blood thinners? I have been giving myself injections for the past two wks so I am not as afraid of clots. Call the dr Please

Re: Cramps in Cast

Thank you. I'll call tomorrow AM first thing. I've been considering blood clots, but trying to convince myself they aren't what I'm experiencing. But then I keep reading things on the internet.

I take an aspirin once a day per my doctor's orders.

Thanks again.

Re: Cramps in Cast

I would also call ASAP because there is also compartment syndrome to worry about.

Re: Cramps in Cast

I had the same problem, but in my foot... Dr. gave me a muscle relaxer to help keep it from cramping until I could get the cast/splint off.

Re: Cramps in Cast

I went to the ER the day after my original post after talking with my doctor. Turns out it was actually nothing. But better safe than sorry I suppose.

I got a new cast which seems to be helping. I also was given clearance to be out of my back brace for my spine injury (yay for that being better!) and that seems to be making it better. Still hurts, but not as bad.

I still am on a fairly regular narcotic regimen, which helps.

Feel better soon!

Liz
