where to go next? rt leg/foot pain.
Hi all, I have been having rt foot pain (now foot and lower leg pain) for a year.
Short version: I just have had X rays and an MRI done to attempt to diagnose this. X rays were done at podiatrist, who said foot bones were normal, but identified a thickened area about 2-3 inches above the ankle in my distal fibula. This corresponds to one pain point.
Pod said based on my description she'd boot me for tendinitis but wanted the fibula checked, so referred to ortho. Visited ortho, who agreed with possible stress reaction/fx in fibula, set me up for an MRI. I have been in a cam boot for almost 2 weeks now. MRI just done, and came back normal - no soft tissue swelling and bone looked good. Ortho has said he can't help me w/this and suggested an ankle/foot specialist. I got a list of some but since it's "outside their system" I have to set it all up myself. I am in the process of requesting my MRI and films.
Despite being in the boot, I still have quite a bit of pain, and I am really frustrated. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Back info about me:
40 y/o, female, healthy BMI/Fit/healthy otherwise. Cyclist/runner/triathlete prior to 2009, off from 2009-2011 for birth of 2 kiddos.
In summer of 2011 I was working on baby weight and fitness after baby #2 which took nearly a year to all come off. The foot pain started roughly in the fall, when I'd started running more consistently. At the time it was in the top of foot, for example when I pulled toes up, so I saw my reg. doc in Dec 2011, who said (not surprisingly) RICE, knock off the running for a while. So I did, for 3 months. Never completely went away, but I felt it could be managed. During the winter I was instructing at a ski area, and had no problems with the foot related to this. It was always something I noted at rest anyway.
Completed a half-mara in April 2012 (at a very easy pace, and probably not long enough trained given the winter rest period but I no significant problem with this). Thought at the time it was extensor tendinitis.
After the half, continued exercising/running through June. Did one tri in June (sprint distance). Changed my shoe lacing, used foot creams/ice etc. Tendinitis seemed to be staying, maybe even improving, but I stopped running in July due to my kid's health issues and distraction.
Continued exercising, 2-3x week at gym w/personal trainer. Sometime in late summer I noted my foot was bothering me more than ever, and I could feel a constant aching pain in both the foot and outside of my leg, pretty much from the point of the thickened fibula on down into my foot. This is now constant, but I do have "good" days where it is not as noticeable.
Pain got worse with time, but my kid was having a big op, so I put off my own discomfort, then had to wait as my husband switched jobs and to a new insur. Long story short I FINALLY started seriously investigating this in Oct, but it's taken a month to get to today...
Glad that structurally my leg/foot appear to be OK, but why the pain??? What kind of doctor do I even go to from here, & wonder what an ankle/foot doc might see that the pod/ortho haven't.
From time to time, I take Advil but really haven't done this often - it's a blanket over the cause... but I am feeling a little more desperate now that I don't have a clear path to move forward.
Does anyone have experience with a physiatrist? Should this be something I look into?
Currently not running at all, in a cam boot, and have been told I can exercise/swim since there's no structural issue (but am not running).
Thanks for any thoughts on this.
