Triple Arthrodesis/Subtalor fusion

Had a comminuted left calcaneal fracture and surgery didn't take. My foot is out of alignment, I have a bad limp and continually in pain when I stand or walk for a period of time. Two doctors said the next step is fusion to align the foot, relieve the arthritis and help me walk better.

I've heard mixed results of others who had this done. Any feedback is appreciated as I'm not sure whether to leave it or go for the surgery.

Thanks

I am in week 9 after triple arthro and achilles lengthening. I had no choice but to have it done as my foot was turned out like yours and my arch was collapsed. My suggestion would be to go to New England Baptist - Dr. Leavitt and get his opinion. I was referred to him after spending too many years at Lahey who mis-diagnosed my condition. As for surgery, you will be non weight bearing for at least 7 weeks and maybe longer. I go for an xray on Sat and if good Leavitt will put me into a walking boot and start me on PT. What ankle is it? If left you will definitely be able to drive right after surgery. Mine was right so I waited a week before attempting to drive with my left foot. If you decide to have surgery you will need a knee walker . Let me know if you want to buy mine?

Re: Triple Arthrodesis/Subtalor fusion

Thanks for the info, very helpful. The first surgery was about the same recovery no weight bearing for 8 weeks etc. so unfortunately I know the routine. I used a rolling chair to slide around the first time how did the knee walker work for you?

I had two opinions in NH and they both said the same thing. I did hear good things about NE Baptist though and I'll probably give your doctor a call.

It is the left foot so that makes the driving easier.

I hope that your xrays go well.

Thanks again.

glad to hear you are considering calling Dr. Leavitt. Google him and you will see his website. He is probably the best foot specialist in Boston. I can't imagine not having the knee walker. I use the crutches to get in and out of the car. The knee walker goes with me in the car and takes me everywhere faster than I could walking.

I agree with Powerplay! The knee walker is great! I couldn't imagine how I would have gotten by without it!

Thanks for the input! It sounds like you had similar surgery, how is working out?

Re: Triple Arthrodesis/Subtalor fusion

I've had a rough way to go but not because of the surgery. My surgery was in April. In August while in PT, they had me working with a student in her clinicals. She did a test wrong and ended up busting my subtalar fusion. I am about to have surgery again January 16th. Had she not done what she did I would have been towards the end of my recovery. Please feel free to ask any kinds of questions regarding the surgery. I had a double arthrodesis with achilles lengthening. The achilles was the least of the procedure. Never really had much for symptoms with it.

Re: Triple Arthrodesis/Subtalor fusion

Sorry to hear about that, I'm sure that it's got to be very frustrating for you after going through the ordeal of surgery and starting recovery. I had surgery when I originally fractured my heal and two of the surgeons that I saw about the fusion aren't big fans of PT for this type of recovery. Maybe that's why who knows.

Anyhow, hang in there and I wish you all the best.

Thanks for your consideration.

Xray went well showing that the fusing is working well. After 10 weeks of NWB I am not full weight bearing using the boot. Absolutely no pain when I had to stand barefooted. Dr. wants me to use crutches for 2 weeks just for stablily not for any weight support. I start PT tomorrow and I am pleased with the outcome. Dr. Leavitt is absolutely the best, dedicated foot surgeon in Boston. I highly recommend that you schedule an appt with him.

Re: Triple Arthrodesis/Subtalor fusion

Thanks for the update. That is good news for you and encouraging for me.

I did schedule an appointment with him for after Christmas based on your reccomendation.

He'll be my third opinion. I want to feel confident the surgery takes this time.

How did your foot realignment go? I think you said your foot was also turned out.

Glad to hear that you are meeting with Leavitt - good move on your part to be sure. My foot looks pretty good and I the swelling is gone but now that I start PT today I am sure it will swell some. The foot angle has definitely been straigtened out and no looking pointing at 2 PM. Since I was born with 2 flat feet I don't know if the Triple Arthro corrected that and forgot to ask him on Sat. I will ask the PT people today. I have absolutely no pain when standing on my new 10 week old ankle. It is stiff and parts feel a little numb but that is it which really surprised me.

Thanks. Hope you do as well as I did so far. Be prepared to be NWB for a little longer this time since you are having the Achilles lengthening . He kept me off for 10 weeks but now full weight bearing with the boot . When I went to PT for the first time today, the therapist said the lengthening added a few weeks cause they are concerned about rupturing if too soon.

Re: Triple Arthrodesis/Subtalor fusion

Oh I had the achilles lengthening in the last surgery. This surgery will involve removing all existing hardware, debriding the subtalar joint, inserting bone grafts, and inserting two screws into the subtalar joint. My achilles is good to go! Thank you for your well wishes. Surgery is January 16th...can't be here soon enough.
