Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

Hello,

I am not the only one suffering a severe pain in my foot and the reason for it has not been found.

I have a long and ongoing problem with severe pain in my foot which was caused by my foot becoming trapped and twisting.

It was swollen, bruised from my toes to my knee and I heard a crack. I went straight to hospital where I was x rayed and seen by a doctor who told me that I had torn the ligaments. He pointed out some coloured blurb on the x ray saying that was the ligament.

I was bandaged and told to rest and it would be better in 4 - 6 weeks. It was not so I returned to hospital and was told and shown the same thing by another doctor. Again it did not get better and because i was going over I was seen by an orthopaedic consultant who told me I would need an operation. I asked him if it would cure the pain he said my foot would be as good as new.

I had the operation and while my leg was in plaster it was comfortable, when the plaster was removed I could still feel the pain although it was much lighter than before the operation. If only it had stayed like that.

As time went on and I began to use my foot more the pain got worse so I had an MRI scan then tablets, physio, injections (Made it worse), more physio, accupuncture and TENS machine. None of these did anything to ease the pain and some made it worse.

I saw one specialist who x rayed it and said that there was osteporosis, he showed me the x ray pointing out a white/yellow blurb but this means nothing to me.

Last year I began to suffer a few falls and turned my ankle which caused it to swell up so I visited doctor who made an appointmnet to see an Orthopaedic Physician. I then had another fall which caused bruising, swelling and I found my toes were becoming difficult to move then a few weeks later I was unable to move my toes or ankle, that was in September.

I had an x ray which showed no fracture, that was all I was told anyway.
I've had accupuncture again but have no relief from the pain.
My foot gave way again which was like a hot stabbing pain in my foot and ankle since which I've had stabbin pains in both legs, arms, hands and back.

I asked a doctor why my toes would not move after a fall, he replied he did not know.
The physio gave me some foot exercises to do which I am unable to do because of the pain in my leg.

For some reason I have a feeling that they do not want to find out what the problem is because of a lack of interest or urgency.

Can anyone help please with these questions;

What, other than bones and ligaments could be damaged after a fall?

If an x ray shows osteoporosis would another x ray 10 years later still show osteoporosis.

I asked the doctor why my toes will not move after a fall, he said he did not know. Does anyone know?

I keep going dizzy, could that be related? (A doctor checked my bloodpressure and heart for this)

It seems the more that is done to my foot the worse the pain becomes and I've found the opposite to be true the more I rest it the easier the pain becomes, or did do in the past.

Would a big boot and crutches be of any help? No one from the health service has mentioned this.

Does anyone know about ICAT in the UK?

I saw a physio back in September who had a "look" at my foot. That night I had a pounding pain in my leg which lasted 15 -20 seconds since then I have become week and tired all of a sudden. I was checked for thrombosis which came back negative.

I am in pain from my foot constantly, it gets worse after walking and for some reason can become worse seated or lying down.
It varies from hot to cold and at times my foot feels like it is being crushed.
I feel pins and needles, numb, stabbing, shooting, a hitting pain and at times it feels like someone is pinching me.

Also Iit's felt like my foot is wet but nothing is there to cause this.

My foot feels worse after immersing it in warm water.

Sorry for the long message.

Thanks

Joe

Re: Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

I had an extensive foot & ankle surgery 12 weeks ago. I experience some of the sensations you describe. I attribute it to nerve damage done during surgery. Nerve tissue must be moved around to get at things so some damage may be unavoidable. I am hoping it heals in time. You may also have damaged tendons in your fall....that was the start of my problems years ago.

I thought maybe I was crazy as I sometimes feel as though there is water between my toes or on my foot but when I remove my sock I find the foot is completely dry. So I am gladto hear I am not the only one. If I have my foot down a lot to exercise or using crutches it does burn....I think that is due to inflamation. Graduated support stockings help some, I just forget to wear them sometimes.

Not sure about your Drs over there since I am in ND, USA....just thought it might help to know someone else feels similar things. Best of luck....post again, let us know how you are doing.

Re: Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

Hi Joe,
I'm in USA, not familiar with ICAT. I'm not medically trained, but has dr checked you for neuropathy pain? It's nerve pain, which can sometimes be treated with meds. Tests can be done, usually with a Neurologist. So sorry you're having such a rough time with the continued pain. Don't give up!

Re: Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

Hi it sounds like you have some nerve damage. Are you taking any nerve pain meds such as gabapentin (neuron tin) lyrics topomax there are some others. I believe topomax is the only one that won't put weight on you. Start on low dose to avoid suite affects I take !100 topomax just at night so I'm not drowsy at daytime.

I would suggest a cam walker boot for about sic weeks to give it a break the kind that goes up to the calf. I'd see a good pain mgt dr too one that can give you a good block to help with that pain. Try researching foot injections or blocks see if you find something. Good luck cathy

Re: Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

Hi,
Thank you all for your replies.
I gave a doctor a list of symptoms which included my foot feeling wet but they did nothing. Their attitude is that the MRI Scan revealed nothing so there is nothing to cause me pain.

At no time as anyone mentioned Neurologist but I'm certainly going to mention it to the doctor when I see him next.

Thanks

Joe

Re: Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

Good luck Joe! I did some reading on neuropathy last night....it could be your problem. I remember my father in law having it in his foot due to diabetes. He didn't have much of any feeling though.

I had a lot of burning in my foot all night mainly at 2 incisions...12 weeks post op....maybe I have sympathy pains for you after reading your post!! ;-)

I think your foot feels worse after being in warm water because it swells....you may not visibly notice it, but I know mine does a bit. Try icing after bathing.

Keep posting....I am interested to hear what you find out! Take care....Bonnie

Re: Foot Pain - Can Someone Help Please

Neuropathy pain varies, depending on cause, from what I know. Both my Mom, hubby and I have suffered from long term neuropathy pain following shingles. Mine and hubby's is minor, area affected is where shingles broke out. Sharp, shooting pain, followed by intense burning and throbbing pain. Thankfully only lasts min or two and attacks are not frequent. Mom's is worse, maybe due to location of her shingles (face). She suffered from several attacks of pain a week. Dr prescribed neurotin (sp) which has helped a lot. Not only has decreased severity of pain, but number of attacks and duration. I think it is definitely worth seeing a Neurologist. Keep us posted on how you're doing. Btw,,,MRI's don't always show everything.
