Burning incision

I was given ok to go PWB on Tues and have been, slowly. Have probably pushed a little harder, as we tend to do while recovering. Last nite and all today, I've had tremendous burining down the whole side of my foot, along incision and surrounding tissue, as well as top of foot and down to last three toes. I don't remember this from my other surgery, but is this from nerve healing? The pain has been so bad I've had to take pain med. Pain woke me last nite and had hard time getting comfort.

Has anyone experienced this? if so, is there anything I can do beside elevate?

Re: Burning incision

I'm so sorry to hear your having this burning pain! I had more of that pain before my stitches came out. Now they are out, I don't get it as bad. Since your in a boot, do you think the extra friction is causing this new pain? I assume they put steri-strips on the incision, but maybe put a sock on that covers the entire incision? Sorry I'm not more help! From all my research pre and post op it seems like so many people experience this and that the nerves are trying to go back to normal.
I hope you get some relief soon!
Erin

The only burning I've had is in my toe ad topically when I touched my scar in the beginning. I have had a tough time with pain so far - during the weight bearing stage - but it was achy, sometimes very much so.

This sounds like nerve issues. My toe is still burning, pretty much all of the time. I think the anesthesiologist nicked it when he tried to do a block on the inner nerve.

I hope your pain eases soon.

Oh and don't forget to keep icing. I forget sometimes and when I remember, and do it a ton, my pain does diminish.

Re: Burning incision

Thanks to you both for taking time to reply. Yes Erin, I do have steri strips over the incision and I wear a really thick, soft sock under the boot, that comes up to my knee. I assume the burning is from nerves reconnecting.

Snow, I'll try increasing ice to see if that helps, but topically, along with the burning pain came ultra sensitivity to heat and cold all of a sudden. Couldn't submerge foot into a warm bath this morning as it felt scalding hot to that section of my foot.

Hope this doesn't last long!

Re: Burning incision

I have that too! When I get my foot wet it takes a bit to be okay whereas my other foot is fine... Do call your doc!

Re: Burning incision

I had burning when I started using the boot and doing more and I wore socks too to keep it from rubbing agaisnt the boot....it did go away though. With my first it was when I was full weight bearing and my 2nd I didn't really use the boot all that much(I should have used it more) but Ihad burning when I started partial weight bearing and it went away when I did full weight bearing. It might be the nerves like you guys already said.
