foot pain on the outside of foot - Foot Problems Message Board

I seemed to have stressed my foot a few weeks ago (painting on a ladder, I think) while I've been training for a half marathon I'm running in two more weeks. The pain/discomfort seems to mainly be on the outside of my foot, but does seem to move around in foot (to the ball at time and into my toes). After reading other posts, I think I strained my peroneus longus muscle (since stretching my calf and massaging up the side of my leg help it some). So, my main question is "Does anyone know any other causes to a pain like this and what sort of treatment can I do while still training?" The pain is not extreme and I can run my timed runs well with the discomfort, but I do end up having to limp somewhat the next few days. And also, I just get a brand new pair of running shoes (even wider than my last pair) last week since my old shoes where about at the 400 mile mark.

I began having pain in my foot in November, with a noticably sore spot on the outside of my foot. It took me three doctors (ortho, podiatrist 1, and finally podiatrist 2) to diagnose me with peroneal tendonitis. I have flat feet which has led to the problem. My podiatrist has me on anti inflamatory, mild stretches, and is making a new set of orthodics. The pain does go below and to the toes at times. He indicated that it will take a while to cure this problem. Mine is pretty acute as I did not see a doctor for a while, expecting it to go away. Hope this helps.

An exray can rule out stress fracture. Orthopedic taping for extra support step by step may help. Breaking in new shoes while training is extra stress on the feet, perhaps more warming up and stretching could help. Excessive pronation?
