| Re: Hammertoe question
Hi Purplebee99,
I had hammertoe surgery on 3/30/04 on both feet, 2nd, 4th, and 5th toes and right now I am wearing tennis shoes and can were my wide toes shoes also. Last week I started running a little bit on the cardio machines but the pressure became too much and my toes started hurting and swelling up so I stopped my workouts.
I was unable to walk properly for the first few days, I think like 3 or 4 but then after that I could get around okay but tried to stay of my feet as much as possible. Since you are a student and have to walk around campus I would advised doing the surgery during a break.
As of today my toes are still swollen but I have very little to no pain. I worry about my toes returning to normal size and the scarring but can't really tell since it's still early in my recovery. I hear it can take up to six months before they start looking normal again.
Overall I think I will be happy with the results of the surgery and if I had to do it over again I would do a lot more research on the procedure itself as well as the doctor performing the surgery. Reading this board I learned there are a few options for hammertoe correction and with that information I could have started with the least invasive procedure first. Just make sure you do plenty of research and know exactly what the surgeon is planning to do BEFORE the surgery. Hope this info was helpful, ask if you have any specific questions.
