Ankle swollen after bunion surgery anyone else? - Foot Problems Message Board

I had bunion surgery on my right foot 10 days ago and everything seems to fine except that my right ankle is swollen. The doctor didn't seem concerned with it, he said he wasn't sure what caused it. He changed bandages and wrapped my foot clear up to the ankle and said he thought that would help the swelling. He told me that I don't have to use the crutches anymore and suggested elevating the foot as much as possible. My next appointment is in 10 days. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I too had swelling in just one ankle although i had both feet done. At 3 weeks post-op it was noticably bigger than the right. My physio assured me as did the Dr. that it was due to the joint trauma related to the surgery. Their advice was to keep my legs elevated above heart level and ice to the feet at least 3 times daily. After about 8 weeks I no longer have swelling in either ankle or foot providing I'm not too long on my feet. I hope this helps knowing that you are not the only one who had the swollen ankle problem.

hi im only 5 days post op and my right foot is swollen like a ballon! i so upset that it didnt go down yet. i have a pin in my foot, im so ready to get this pin out of me. i try the ice but it seems like my toes go down and swell back up! well good luck to you!

The swelling will take quite a while to go away. I am almost 6 months post-op from having both feet done at the same time, and there are still times my feet swell if I am on my feet for too long. Be patient....and keep them elevated as much as possible!
