5 months post op fusion - Foot Problems Message Board

Hi All,
I had my doctor's appt today. I am about 5 months post op fusion of my big toe. I have been having more pain in the joint area over the past couple of weeks. My doctor x-rayed and said everything looked good and all the hardware was ok. She did say that it was time to start physical therapy aka pain and torture. I remember from last times, I will take some ibuprofen before my appointment. I have 4 weeks scheduled for now, and we will take it from there. The prescription says to work on gait and ROM of ankle.
I was told that as my swelling goes down the plate in my toe is going to become more visible. It might even start to bother me. Ugh! I was told that I could have a surgery to remove it about a year after the original surgery. That woiuld be sometime next February. Recovery time should only be a couple of weeks. I am not going to worry about until or if the plate starts to bother me.
I hope that everyone is doing well with their recoveries.

P.S. Ellen, it will be interesting to compare therapies as we have surgery recoveries. I hope that you are doing well.

Yea!!!!

You get to start PT!!!! I have to say that despite the work and inconvenience, it all has been worth it. How often do you get to go per week? I have PT twice a week for about an hour. I now mostly stretch at home, so in therapy we work on balancing and strengthening and at the end I have electrical stimulation to help with the swelling. I have exercises that I do at home, some twice a day. I have completed three weeks, and last week she thought I would need only three more sessions. As you gain ROM your gait should improve, mine really did. It also felt so good to be doing something that contributes to getting back on my feet.
