Long term bunion surgery results anyone? - Foot Problems Message Board

Hi all!

I'm over three months post op bunion surgery on my right foot and doing great. Haven't been able to post because a storm blew our modem a few weeks ago and we just replaced it. Anyways, my question is for those of you who had bunion surgery in the past. I am wondering about the chance of reoccurence of the bunion. My doc said surgery is not a cure and it could happen over time. Has anyone done any research on the long term reoccurence rate? I am also wondering because I still need to have the left foot done (next year-can't wait) and don't want to do it if there is a good chance of reoccurence. The recovery wasn't fun, but the right foot feels and looks so much better. Also anyone use the bunion splints?

My doctor told me that the chance of the bunions reforming is almost nothing. Especially if the screws are left in place. He said even if they are removed the chance is still very small. Once the bone heels in the correct place, it shouldn't move. Hope that helps???!!!??

My understanding is that the reoccurrence rate is small, but it exists. For that reason, my podiatrist recommends (and I intend to get) orthotics after my bunionectomy is fully healed.

I figure, also, it took me nearly 40 years to develop bunions to the point where at least one was bothering me. If it takes me another 40 years to have a reoccurrence, well, I might be dead by then anyway. I'm not too worried.

I have been wearing orthotics for four years (for p.f.) and didn't notice the bunions until last year. But I plan on wearing them from now on as well. Maybe I would have developed the bunions much quicker without them. I am a horrible overpronator with tall arches so I am currently looking for shoes to also help stabilize my foot when I walk. I hate the thought of reoccurrence. But, if I am 80 years old and retired that's another story. Good luck everyone!
