Unhappy Doc Didn't see anything...3 months ago

Ok, this doesn't seem related to any of the other issues on this board, but I'm gonna give it a go.

Back in the end of march/beginning of april I was cleaning out my horse's feet when she lost her balance and found it on my foot. She doesn't wear shoes so normally it wouldn't hurt...but I couldn't even walk for a good half of an hour. I let it go for the night and just iced it (after struggling to get my riding boot off). Well, the next morning I couldn't get a shoe on it was so swollen and bruised. I went to the doctor's, limping, but managing to be mobile. Xrays were taken, but nothing was seen (I need to change doctors by the way considering I have problems build up over years that "aren't anything"...next doctor will think I'm insane when I list the issues). I shrugged it off and went on my way.

Well, it still hurts like hell to the touch. I can't wear by paddock boots, have to work in sneakers, but I can manage to get my riding boots on. I don't really know if this explanation will make sense, but the outter half of the injured foot is raised, where my normal foot slopes downward towards my pinky. This is the area that is in a ton of pain. I also have this weird indent where the toe of her hoof first hit...it's not like a cut (it never broke the skin or anything).

Is this cause for concern? My mother just keeps saying it's bruised it'll be fine. But she continuously said that about my back when I in fact had a cracked disc, and unfused vertebrae. But that's all another story! I've been having joint issues (especially my ankles) for quite some time (I feel like I'm way older than my birth certificate says), but never in the foot. The injured foot will ache like crazy, that ankle swells now, and the pain has not changed at all where it was stepped on.

Any suggestions...everyone says it's nothing...well, I never knew that it was normal to be in pain! Who knew such a little, petite horse could do so much damage!

I would see a podiatrist or orthopedist. Could have been a hairline that didn't show up, it happens. I know what you mean about your joints feeling older than you actually are.. I am very young and have had many joint problems throughout the last 6 years or so.. Good luck!

Hairline fractures often don't show up or are very hard to see on x-rays taken soon after the injury. It can take up to two weeks for them to be apparent. You could look into having it x-rayed again. They could also do a bone scan to see if there is any damage to the bone that isn't showing up on x-ray. This long after the accident, if it was just bruised you would think that it should be getting better, so you might look into seeing another doctor who can check it out more thoroughly and attentively. Good luck!

I had almost the same thing happen with my horse. It was the outside to my left foot. I also went to my dr. (also said it was nothing, just like yours). I now have a bone infection in that same foot. Is it related? Idon't know. but my dr now said something caused the break in the skin that started in infection. Of course, Ialso go kicked in the same foot bya horse in the pasture, and then I had one of my horses fall on that same foot. again, I don't know what caused it, but I would stay on top of it. anytime type of cut or bruise that our horses give us can be pretty bad. Good luck
