What kind of Dr is everyone going to OS or Podiatrist
I've been reading thru a lot of the post, and I'm not sure about the type of Drs that everyone has been using. I thought a Podiatrist was an expert on feet and that they do foot surgery. Many people seem to use an OS, for the same thing. I'm not sure now who should do my toe amputation. I didn't like my OS, going to a Podiatrist tomorrow. Has anyone had a tood response to a DPM? or do you prefer your OS doing surgery?

I could not stand my OS. He didn't listen to me at all, and always told me nothing was wrong. My Podiatrist did my ankle surgery, he was much better than my first OS.

All of my surgical procedures were done by a DPM (ankle, bunionectomy and fusion). I did seek a second opinion from an OS, but I didn't care for his choice of procedure. I was very happy with my DPM.

I think in any case, you need to make sure the doctor is certified. Podiatrists should be board certified from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and OS's should be board certified from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. Lostmary, I read on another thread that the infectious disease doc sent you to the podiatrist, so I think that's a good sign. It's good to get referrals from doctors. Since you didn't like your OS, you could find another foot and ankle OS in your area (there is a new patient site from the AOFAS). I do think it's important to see board certified and recommended docs in any field, but in the end it comes down to how you feel with them. Do you trust them? Do you feel like they listen to you?
Unfortunately, since a non-board certified podiatrist cut a major nerve in my foot, I will probably never trust a DPM again. I like my OS that is trying to fix my foot... I feel he offered me more options and treatment ideas than the podiatrists were; and in the end, the surgery he performed seemed extensive for a DPM to do. I suggest you meet with the doctor tomorrow, and see how you feel. If you don't like him/her, get another doctor.
