quick question for ppl who had surgery! - Foot Problems Message Board

when i saw i new doc the other day i was ask if i was tested for things like stds etc. i told her yes! during the time i had surgery on my foot i had blood work done. i assume that they test for every thing before surgery

to every one who had surgery and had blood work done can you tell me what the blood work was for?? i believe thats what it was for and if something was wrong they would notify the person? just a quick question, im just curious about what it was for! thanx

I don't know why they would test for STDs before surgery. I thought they just did a complete blood count to make sure that you aren't anemic or low on platelets or having some weird blood thing going on. There would really be no reason for them to test for STDs, because the general rule of thumb in medicine is just to treat everybody (as far as safety precautions) like they have a horribly contagious bloodborne disease. The only reason that they would test you for something like HIV or hepatitis would be if somebody got stuck with a needle during the surgery and was exposed to your blood. Otherwise, if a disease will not affect your recovery from surgery and nobody was exposed to your blood, they wouldn't test you for it.

You can always contact the hospital or doctor that did the bloodwork and request a copy of the results to see what they tested.

ok i was just curious about what the blood work was for. i believe i am anemic (sp) or something like that! i feel very different since the surgery its like im cold when every one else is hot. my boyfrind thinks my blood is low. maybe??

I had blood taken that was later used to pour into my open foot before they sewed me up (white cells only?), to improve the healing process.
