Orthopedic Dr. or Podiatrist? - Foot Problems Message Board

Hello! I have a "bump" on the top of my foot where the big toe connects to the foot. It is not a bunion. I asked my orthopedic Dr. about it when I was there to get my elbow checked. I forget what he called it but said if it began to get too painful or I didn't like it cosmetically that he could do surgery to shave the bone to flatten it. It is pretty pronouned and is painful, especially with certain shoes. I can live with it a while, but it will not ever go away on its own. My question is which type of doctor is better to handle this? Orthopedic or Podiatrist?

I would not have an OS touch my feet unless they specialize in feet and ankles. That is my personal preference. My suggestion is that you get a second opinion or maybe even a third and include a podiatrist in the group and then make your decision. I am not confident that the problem you described is as simple as shaving off the bone, so I'd get it checked out further. Best wishes - eko

I feel the same way. I would go to an orthopedic surgeon ONLY if he/she specializes in feet. Remember feet are complex, require a lot of attention when it comes to diagnosing a problem and they have to take you everywhere you go for the rest of your life...

find yourself a dr who specializes in feet. Look for a foot clinic or something in your area.

I highly recommend you consult with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot surgery. Find a group that is affiliated with a teaching hospital, if possible. Usually such a group will have knee people, foot people, etc. I had consultations with 3 foot specialists before I found a doctor I felt comfortable with - and now I'm glad I didn't use the first 2.
