I had bunion surgery on my rt foot in June and on my right foot in September. I am glad to report that I recovered a lot faster from the second surgery. I am still dealing with some swelling on my left foot, but overall, I am happy with the results. Since I had the first surgery I have been wearing Birkenstock sandals, but I live in Idaho and the weather here has been cold and we are expecting snow in the next few days. What type of closed toe shoe have others worn?
Hello there. I wore something wide, soft and well, sort of comfortable. I started with a huge pair of high quality shoes made for senstive feet. They were Propet brand. Expensive. After that I just moved on to sneakers, or runners, as we call them here.
After my first double bunionectomy, I found a pair of wide, low-heeled clogs by Clark (good brand) that really worked well. The biggest challenge is width as your feet will be swollen. Go for soft, maleable fabrics. Sneakers actually weren't great for me as they felt tight and constricting. I pretty much went up a half size and also tried for shoes that came in wide. Frankly, don't buy much yet---just enough to get around. Your feet will be changing over the next few months so go for the minimum to get around. Likely you'll be back to your old size after 9-12 months.
You say shoe size should be back to normal by 9-12 months? I had bunion surgery in May 2004 and 7 months later my foot still doesn't feel 100% - the flexibility in my big toe is still limited and hurts if I try to bend it too much. Is this normal??
Yes I think it is. Everyone heals differently but I was told that it can take up to a year for your feet to be back to normal. As for the flexibility, I would talk to your doc about some PT or exercises you can do to get a better range of motion. I bend my toes downard and then upward 20 times each day and have been doing since about week 6 post surgery. Seems to definitely help with stiffness and flexibility.
