Talking New Heelie Here! - Calcaneal Fracture

Hello all -- my name is Chrys and I am new to this forum! I feel so grateful to have found it.

I sustained a Calcaneal fracture on April 9th (right foot), while I was going down 3 small stairs in my home. My foot slipped off the edge of the stair, turned to the left, while my body fell over the stairs.

My break isn't as severe as most that I've read here; I did not have to have surgery and per my OS, the break was closed &
'stable' . The break is at the front of my heel, not the back. I'm not sure if that is worse or not.

Currently, I have on a removable walking boot/cast -- even though I cannot put any weight on it whatsoever nor drive. It sux to have to use crutches, and I ordered a wheelchair to help get around the house. I just started back to work this week too. Last week, I couldn't move my toes at all - I would try w/my mind to move then and nothing would happen. However, as of yesterday, I can move them up & down, and flex to some degree. I talked to the OS yesterday, she said when I have the boot off to ice it, to move my ankle slowly around too.

My next dr. appt is May 4th and I pray I will start partial weight-bearing at that time, but we shall see. I have a wedding Memorial weekend to attend and we're going to Universal studios in Florida on July 9th -- which will be 3months to the day since I broke my heel. Does anyone think I will be walking come July?? I know this type of break is horrible and slow-healing, but I would hope I would have some mobility by that time.
Thanks so much for listening -- I am sending good wishes to all who are in this same predicament. It sux! LOL ~Crystal

Hey Chrys,

I replied in another thread where you posted (Healing Healies). I'm curious, how were you able to get to work? Did you drive or are you carpooling? I was unable to drive for a long time. Work didn't want to wait for me, so I ended up finding a new job.

**Hey there!

Well, as far as transportation to work, my husband has been dropping me off and my mother has been getting me at work and taking me home. My hubbie works an hour away from our home, but since he has to drop me off first, his commute now is about and 1 hour and 45min. I've tried even public services that provide transporation for the disabled. Either you have to wait for 4-6wks to get approved (I may be out of the cast by then!) or the pick up and drop off times aren't condusive to my work schedule. It's frustrating.

How about you -- what are you doing? I feel bad you had to get a new job. I came back to work just one week after my injury. I started a new job and really couldn't be out, so I had no choice but to come back.

Chrys

Re: New Heelie Here! - Calcaneal Fracture

Hi everyone.'m also grateful to find this board. I get my cast off on Monday 6-6. My fall down the cellar stairs was 4-1, with a shattered left heel. I've read several threads and all the posts have helped. Guess I am in for a slow process of getting back to normal, and I now know I won't expect to be whole again for another few months. PT starts the following week. Hot soaks in the tub sound wonderful. I know I will be doing a lot of that!
Did everyone experience a lot of pain on putting weight on the foot for the first time?
