A bunion nightmare! - Foot Problems Message Board

So here I sit recovering from my first bunionectomy 3 weeks ago am staying with my parents for help with my girls and have learned that my mom's feet (thanks Mom for the great genes) have gotten even worse than they were. She has always had bunions and they are considered severe. While she doesn't have the tailor's bunions like I do, she now has issues with her 2nd toes (next to the big toes on each foot) raising up and right around where the 'knuckle' is she has a bone spur? a bone growth? a hammertoe? not sure what it's technically called but when you look at her feet from the profile the 2nd toe is raised and there's definitely bone protruding. She now has to wrap it in moleskin/bandaids to even be remotely comfortable in shoes. No doubt her severe bunions are now taking their toll on her 2nd toes.

First, does anyone know the technical name for what is going on with her 2nd toes?

Second, her podiatrist said a bunionectomy probably wouldn't alleviate the stress on the second toe but her PCP said it would. I'm inclined to believe the podiatrist. Any thoughts?

Any of you suffer from this situation? She is going to have a bunionectomy done, though she may not be able to have it done this summer so it may be a year away. Any insight you can provide is appreciated.

I had the same thing and mine were called hammertoes.I had both of the 2nd toes taken care of along with the bunions.They can do it at the same time as the bunion surgery.Hope this helps a little bit and good luck to you and your Mom,

That's what my mom's toes do too, which is why I had my surgeries in the first place. Unfortunately, my mom has too many other things going on healthwise that she can't have the surgery.

I had bunion/hammertoe surgery twice this year and the second one was severe, the first moderately severe. The joint closest to the nail was fused and held in place with a pin for four weeks. They will not hammer again because the joint doesn't move. Severe bunions often cause toe #2 to hammer.

Question why the pod. didn't offer to fix the hammertoe with the bunion. It is extremely common and I would make sure this guy knows what he's doing. Ask many regulars in this group about incompetent doctors and the nightmares they have had as a result. Finding a good doc is step #1
