First Time Foot Surgery - Foot Problems Message Board

Hi everyone, I had a bunionectomy and hammertoe surgery Mar 23rd and I haven't fully gotten the feeling back in one of my toes, also with all the exercise I'm doing with my toes I can't get them to touch the floor, they seem to stick up. I haven't been able to find a shoe yet, and my scars are very ugly. If anyone can relate and give me some information, please do so.

I had bunion surgery June 10th.. I still can't get my big toe down either.. but my doctor said that is not uncommone because there is swelling under the toe that can take weeks and weeks to fully go away. Mine is slowly getting better. As for the loss of feeling.. can you feel when you touch your toes or is it that you can't move them? I know when I had my first foot surgery.. tailor bunionectomy on my right foot about 11 years ago.. I couldn't move my small toe for about a year. It can sometimes take a long time for the nerves to fully grow back. I can feel all my toes at the moment, but I still have some loss of feeling on the top of my foot near the incision.

Hi Sukie,

I just got off the phone with my doctor because my toe next to big toe, is sticking up. I had a bone spur in my baby toe removed June 17th, I elected to keep my bunion because it was not causing pain (I think I regret that decision). At the time of surgery the doctor made a small incision at the base of the second toe, supposedly to give big toe and second toe enough room. But the second toe is sticking up!!!

He told me to get some 1 inch bandage tape, and tape it in a criss cross at the base of the toe, so that when as it heals it will heal in the right position. Maybe that can help you.

You will get the feeling back............give it time. I massage my scars as soon as possible, it helps to get feeling and makes it easier for me in the long run so it doesnt bother me if they get touched..................it feels weird at forst but I really think it helps................

My surgery was May 25 - that's only 6 weeks ago! I'm still in my cam-walker and have only just started little exercises.

This is my second foot. I did the first one in January. It takes a while for your big toe to touch the floor. You have to be patient. I know it seems like a long time, but this is nothing! Just keep working it. You can't expect results overnight - of course the scar is ugly! You can't rush this recovery - just relax and do what your doc says. My first foot is great now, but I still treat my scar every day and do my toe exercises.
