Question 3" High Heels

In one months time, I am scheduled to undergo a Bunionectomy on my right foot. I have no pain at present in the joint but experience soreness after wearing 3" heels all evening. My only real reason for this surgery is to be able to continue to wear high heels without the unsightly large joint-viz. with a straightened right big toe. Does anyone else wear 3" heels post op and how soon afterwards? Is the vanity worth the pain, or should I just have wider toed shoes made for me? My surgeon has implied that wearing high heels would be 'a bonus'. I've been told he will use a small metal plate and 2 screws. Can anyone please give me some very urgent advice?

My sympathies and good wishes to you all on the road to recovery...

MaryKent

Re: 3" High Heels

I think I'd ditch the 3" heels in favor of 2" ones...I had a cheilectomy (no bone straightening needed) and the best I can do is the 2" ones...and that's taking Mobic every day. If you're just experiencing soreness as you described, I'd take an anti-inflammatory(Advil, Aleve, whatever) and see if that takes care of it. If so, forget the surgery. Just my 2 cents....

Re: 3" High Heels

I don't have bunion experience, but I had ankle surgery. It is one experience that I would never volunteer for! The pain, the crutches, the physical therapy, the pain... I'm not saying whether or not you should do it, but be sure to weigh the risks of surgery and recovery, as well as the possibility of a poor outcome (like more pain afterward than you have now, because it sounds like your pain is minimal now) before opting for elective surgery. Of course, if the pain is very bad and interferes with daily activities, then the pain and risk of surgery is worth it. So it's all about looking at where you are now, where you want to be, and if surgery will realistically (and with acceptable risk) get you there.

Re: 3" High Heels

1. How large is the bunion?

2. Do you have calluses or anything on it?

3. If it's not painful, I would reccomend you not have surgery. It's very painful and takes a while to heal. A lot of people are not happy with the results of the surgery and it's always a last resort. Go ahead and keep wearing the heels and don't have surgery. When the bunion gets sore, just elevate it, ice it, and/or take an aspirin. You also might consider wearing bunion pads when wearing the high heels. Like I said though, surgery is always a last resort and it will leave you worse off than you are at this point if the bunion doesn't cause pain.

Re: 3" High Heels

Don't have surgery for vanity reasons. Not worth it. I've had foot problems all my life, and high heels were only for very special occasions. I had surgery and I have trouble getting any shoe to fit at all. Not to mention the ongoing pain. My surgery was successful in terms of "no bunion" but the pain in the ball of my foot makes everything painful.
