Recent Fall - Should I call my doctor.

Hello All-

I am 8 weeks out from having an open Achilles tendon lengthening procedure. I was nonweight bearing for 4 weeks, and have now been out of my cast and bearing weight for 4 weeks also. I am currently in physical therapy and had been recovering pretty nicely until last night.

Last night, I tripped and fell and hurt my leg. I was scarred to even get up it hurt so bad. After I calmed myself down (I was kind of hysterical), I got up and could walk and bear full weight. My leg still really hurt, so I took a vicoden and went to bed. This morning, it still really hurt so I took another Vicoden (I haven't taken any pain pills except for right after the surgery until now.) and went to work. My leg still really aches and feels really tight up the back, but I think that would be normal. If I had seriously done anything to it I wouldn't be able to walk, right?

I don't want to call the Doctor's office, because they have to be getting sick of me. I don't have therapy until Wednesday, so I just wanted others opinion on if I should be concerned.

Re: Recent Fall - Should I call my doctor.

Kbest - long time! I think you might have pulled a muscle, that hurts and takes a while to go away. I would still call the Doctors office. Who cares what they think. We are talking about walking here. I am glad to hear that you are in PT. How is that going? How are your implants? Are they training you to have better balance? Questions, Questions, Questions.

I am having my implant out next Thursday. I went to Northwestern and saw an orthopedic foot and ankle guy. He said that the implant was in the correct area but was not in all the way. By the way, I still do not walk. I am so sick of it, I want it out.

He said that he was more concerned with the left foot. He said that the heel was not sitting under my foot and ankle. He thought that it would have to be moved over. He was also concerned about he nerve damage in my left foot. Either way, I told him that 'I WANTED TO WALK". He told me to calm down and that we will work on it together. Fair enough!

Re: Recent Fall - Should I call my doctor.

I'm sorry I don't know much about what you had done, but with almost any surgery, I think I'd call, just to be safe. You have every right to call your surgeon if you've got a problem - I think he'd want to know about it. Don't worry a bit about them being "sick of you". When you have any surgery, you NEED and are ENTITLED to decent after-care, which would include phone calls if you have a problem (IMO!). Just tell them exactly what you said here - he may want to see you, or he may say it should be fine, and ease your mind - either way, it'll put your mind at ease, and IF anything did get seriously hurt, you won't be taking the chance of causing continued problems.

Good luck!

JD

Re: Recent Fall - Should I call my doctor.

I fell after having ankle surgery and what was recommended to me was it is safest to call the doctor. If for any reason you feel as if you should call the doctor, even if all it does it calm any worries you might have, then the call will be worth it. Good Luck!

Re: Recent Fall - Should I call my doctor.

Thank you everybody for your posts. I think I am going to see how it feels tomorrow and go from there. My doctor is really nice, but I just feel silly when I call for things. I can't help it I just feel like a pain.

wtwtc- Everything with the MBA implants are going really well. I love them. I wish that yours had a better outcome for you. I am glad that you found someone that could figure out what is going on though.

My doctor did prescribe physical therapy for me a week and a half ago. I go 3 times a week for a month and than I will go back to see my doctor. My doctor said that everything has healed great, I just have to work more to get my strength/balance back. I felt like I was starting to see progress with the PT (I had been there 4 times) and than this fall happened. My leg hurts more now than it did when I started therapy. I don't go to therapy until Wednesday, I just hope that it doesn't through me off too much. I still did my stretches this morning, but it was pretty uncomfortable.
